Post subject:  How do I setup Bootsplash in 5A16

I've searched the forums for a howto on adding the bootsplash, but have had little luck. I see the file in the kernel source /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.11.9-chw-2/drivers/video/bootsplash. Do I need to compile this to make it work? From the previous posts, it looks like it was already compiled in previous versions. If anyone has any insight on getting this setup, it would be appreciated.

It was in earlier versions and I believe will be in R5 final, but for now it has been put on hold because of complications. If cesman is having that many problems with it most likely it will not be easy.

Bascially, the kernel is setup for bootsplash. However, the system still needs to be configured. This entails modification to a few of the init scripts.

With some help of Google and Pedro Jurado Maqueda http://bulma.net/impresion.phtml?nIdNoticia=1812

I finally got bootslash functional with KnoppMyth

This is what I did

#splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/themes/KnoppMyth/config/bootsplash-800X600.cfg >> /boot/initrd.splash

Next edit lilo.conf

change vga=788 for 800X600 65000 colors

commented out initrd=/boot/initrd.gz
added initrd=/boot/initrd.splash
added append="splash=silent"

and ran lilo command....

I haven't been able to see the progress bar, but will keep working on it. I also tried the same process with another theme, but it continues to use the Knoppmyth splash...again I will continue playing with it......

For the progress bar, you need to modify the init scripts.

Hi Guys

thanks for the tips, got the knoppmyth bootsplash going now !!!!

Only trouble is I am now on R5A16, but the version displayed on the bootsplash is R4V5. Any idea how we could create our own image to bootsplash with, I guess any graphic program could do it, but what file format should the file be ?

Hi again

Sussed out how to get my own graphic displaying !!! Brilliant !!!!

I have tried to get this going on my test system, which has an onboard Intel chipset video, which has 1M shared memory, and whenever I try to set the mode to any 800x600 setting in the lilo.conf, on rebooting it says "You have passed an undefined mode number" and lists the possibilities. System still boots up OK.

Is this just because my low ram video chipset cannot handle 800x600 modes ????

I may try a 640x480 image, too see what happens.....

Please help.....

I wonder if someone would be so kind as posting the rcS script for progress bar.

Thx

Post subject:  Bootsplash

Hi guys

As I said earlier, I have got the bootsplash working OK.

Still waiting for some answers back about the progress
bar from the guy who's webpage helped us all earlier,
will post as soon as I have anything...

FYI, have found out that 1MB of video memory is not
enough to do bootsplash. (as on my test box)

Since I put the bootsplash on my main system, if I try
and get into any of the console screens (ie. Ctrl Alt F1 to
F6) I get loads of funny, reverse or large characters,
if I hit return you can just about make out a few of the
large characters as being part of the login: prompt.
This strange display is also evident when rebooting or
shutting down.

Has anyone else noticed this ??? Or have any of you got
the nice Tux background displayed ???

I did try putting the required in my /etc/init.d/rcS to get
the nice Tux background, but it didn't work, so I deleted
the necessary, but didn't clear the funny console screen
problem.

Thanx in advance

Yeah, bootsplash is cool! 8)

I would like to figure out that progress bar, too...Mine takes quite a while to load.

I am getting those same weird characters on the screen when I reboot or shutdown also. Oddly, this only seems to happen when using TV out.

When I had the LCD monitor hooked up I got a really cool transparent window which showed shutdown messages in it. I would love to use this image for both bootup and shutdown, BTW.

Is this still relevant in KM30.2? I've been trying to get a framebuffered console for a while now and am considering trying this boot splash mod.
