Post subject:  Hauppauge remote connected to serial port. Please Help!

Is there someone out there who could enlighten me on how to configure my PVR 250 hauppauge remote connected to serial port ttyS1?

I must admit that I’m completely lost! It seems that KnoppMyth (R5A16) has a “wealth” of configuration/script files related to lirc:
/etc/init.d/lircd
/etc/modutils/lirc
/etc/modutils/lirc-local
/etc/lirc/hardware.conf
/etc/modules.conf
/etc/init.d/lirc
/usr/local/bin/

1)Does anyone have a working lirc serial setup on ttyS1?
2)Should I use the /etc/int.d/lirc or the /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh to start lircd?
3)Should I use /etc/modutils/lirc-local, /etc/modutils/lirc or /etc/modules.conf to set my lircd options?
4)Should the file /dev/lirc be a standard character device file or should it be a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS1?

My HW-setup:
Mobo: Epia M1000 mini-itx
Video capture card: Hauppauge PVR250
Case with integrated ir serial receiver: Cubit 3

Thanks in advance for ANY help!

I thought the hauppauge (at least from a year ago) remotes were limited to the receiver dongles they supply.

I guess a little more info....which remote are you using, which receiver, did you build it? any other relavent hardware info you have

For now ignore the integrated IR reciever. It's a much harder thing to get working.

In your PVR-250 packaging find the IR detector which looks like this (the black thing at the bottom):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.asp?image=15-116-602-05.JPG,15-116-602-06.JPG,15-116-602-08.JPG,15-116-602-07.JPG,15-116-602-09.jpg&CurImage=15-116-602-08.JPG&Description=Hauppauge%20980%20(%20WinTV-PVR-250%20)%20PCI%20Interface%20TV%20Tuner%20Card%20-%20Retail

Plug that into the bottom connector of the card.

Now do the standard PVR-250 LIRC setup as described in the forums and on the wiki. Note that you first need to figure out if you have the old cigar shaped remote or the newer "dog bone" shaped remote.

Thanks khrusher and tjc for your answers!

My remote is a standard grey Hauppauge pvr250 remote.
I tried to build the “Home-brew (16x59 Uart compatible serial port)” receiver.

I did manage to get the integrated remote ir port to work with Fedora core 4. The port is just a standard serial ir receiver connected to ttyS1. My hauppauge remote did work like a charm with the serial port and irxevent. My only problem was configuring MythTv which is a nightmare without KnoppMyth.

So i guess my choices are: A working integrated ir receiver without the help of KnoppMyth or resort to the ugly receiver dongle shipped with my pvr250.
I spent a small fortune on my cubit 3 case so I could place the computer on the shelf next to my TV without annoying my wife :-) I’ll have to find a good place to hide the receiver dongle.

I’m still hopping on getting the serial receiver working but I definitively will use KnoppMyth with or without it. The distro just rocks!

Thanks for all help!

I have a 250 with remote and provided receiver...i found the remote limited (I really like a separate set of buttons for vol/channel and menu navigation).

I tried, without success, to configure a RCA universal remote with the 250's dongle. Seems the 250 dongle/remote need to work as a pair, using only one of the two components is difficult at best.

So I tossed the 250's remote and dongle in a drawer. Now I use a homebrew receiver my RCA remote and the lirc_serial module.

I did have some issues getting the lirc_serial module to load with R5A16, seemed to me an issue with lirc and hte 2.6 kernel.

You may want to read through this thread and assure you are not having the same issue I had.

I had a similar experience as khrusher: my programmable remote is not able to reliably "talk" to the Hauppauge IR dongle, or possibly it's not reliably recording what the silver remote is doing.

PS: LIRC FAQ has this:

Quote:
I have a Hauppauge TV card. Can I use a different remote control with this TV card except the original Hauppauge remote control?

The Hauppauge remote control uses the RC-5 protocol. You should be able to use any TV remote control that uses this protocol. Common brands that use this protocol are Philips and Marantz.

PPS: searching for RC-5 IR receiver found this thread:

Bingo!

I now have a pvr250 remote working with my integrated serial receiver!

Khrusher! You were right. It was the same bug that bit me. I just followed the description in:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4743
Mixed with the advices on how to recompile lirc from:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LIRCHowTo (pointed out by tjc)

i.e. I “apt-get remove lirc”, changed the “#define USE_RDTSC” in lirc_serial.c, recompiled lirc-0.7.1 and reconfigured my lircd.conf and bootmisc.sh

I’m not sure if lircd.conf has to be placed in /etc or /etc/lirc. Mine is in /etc. I’ll investigate that later. For the moment I’m just enjoying the fact that it’s working.

Thank You guys (khrusher, tjc and ceenvee703) for helping me out!

Just thought i would add a bit of what i learned today while trying to use my hauppauge pvr-250 ir dongle with my directv universal remote...

this is a quote from http://www.lirc.org/faq.html (question 5)
Quote:
5. I have a Hauppauge TV card. Can I use a different remote control with this TV card except the original Hauppauge remote control?

The Hauppauge remote control uses the RC-5 protocol. You should be able to use any TV remote control that uses this protocol. Common brands that use this protocol are Philips and Marantz.

anyway - i couldnt seem to get my rca universal remote to talk any RC-5 protocol even after trying to set the remote to several philips settings...

i hope this helps someone! im considering switching to my serial ir receiver so i can just use the universal remote... thanks for the great info in this thread!

edit: oops! forgot my only db9 serial port is in use for my directv control cable... i'll have to live with using two remotes for now...

I did the same tests...tried every philips and Marantz setting in the book. no joy. Was kinda fun building the receiver, I had never soldered anything before.
