Hey everyone. I've been ecstatic with mythtv, and tried compiling what I've done for others (Tier 2) http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5826

Never done an upgrade, and not sure exactly how it does it and what effect it will have... if anyone can enlighten me, that would be great. Following hte link above, you get a full rundown of the few minor adjustments I've made, and since I'm content, I don't want to upgrade and spend a weekend fixing things...
I dropped by the Wiki and noted that a backup is necessary and it wipes hda1 clean, which is damn near frightening.

Thanks in advance!

You left out a couple of key items about yourself and your installation...

1. Do you use HDTV? If so, R5A22 is a must-have. Lot 'o stuff has been changing in Myth to make HD recording and playback better.

2. Which version are you upgrading FROM? R5V4? R5A18? In other words, how big a step up R5A22 will be depends on where you are coming FROM.

I'd say, do it.

And don't stress about hda1 so much. It's only your operating system. It's hda4 you need to protect, that's your archive of Bay Watch and other treasures!

:)

just make sure you run backup before you upgrade and you should be fine.

Carefully follow the instructions on the wiki. Make sure you backup more than you think you'll need. I backed up most of /etc (this helped a lot because it saved my custom lirc config) and all of /root as well as XF86Config-4. Don't forget to backup any extra databases or extra software installed in /var/www/html (I had a Drupal install and a gallery2 install).

Following those and the other suggestions here, you should have an easy time.

Nice work on this release cesman. It works great. BTW, you and I still need to do sushi down in Little Tokyo!

Um, the heading answered #2, and if you followed the link, it covers all my hardware and thus noted a pvr-250, aka no hd.

so HD is where the major improvements are, as well as simpler fresh installs... yeah, my little 666 pentium & pvr-250 should be ok for now till it breaks. thanks for everyone's input and confidence!

Good advise! That worked for me!

In short order, I was able to record more programs!

Some issue with nuvexport to work out. (Hope to work out before I run out of disk space! .. Discussed in other threads.)

I wasn't completely configured the way I would like under R5A16, so the upgrade came at a good time for me! Auto-upgrade didn't do anything for my PVR-350 "silver" remote.. bummer!

The installer recognized my on-board LAN chip! wheeee! So, I could pull out the spare LAN card!

Good improvement over R5A16. Kudos to the developers! :D

(I'm not using "HD".)
