Just wanted to throw something out there that I had to fix twice.

The path to mplayer is wrong on both r5a16 and r5a22. It points to an invalid path which is easily fixed by symlinking the proper path to what myth expects (or by modifying how myth calls mplayer in the setup dialogs somewhere). The weird thing is that the frontend doesn't complain when mplayer isn't found, it just silently ignores the request to play the file or flashes a black screen very fast then goes back to the video playlist.

The invalid path it points to by default is /usr/local/bin/mplayer, but mplayer actually lives in /usr/bin. So, a ln -s /usr/bin/mplayer /usr/local/bin/mplayer fixes it..when you upgrade you have to fix it again.

Is this just my problem or is it common but overlooked?

well if you fix it in the settings then you wouldn't have to fix it again after upgrade.
