Post subject:  R5A26 and FX 5200 Ultra - Resource Conflict disables GDM

I tried a fresh install of R5A26 with one monitor connection to my FX 5200 Ultra (DVI port using DVI to VGA adapter). GDM attempts to start 3 times and then quits. The error message indicates that a resource conflict prevented GDM from starting X-Windows.

Here's the output at the end of the XFree86 log file.

****INVALID MEM ALLOCATION**** b:0xf0000000 e: 0xf7ffffff correcting^G
Requesting insufficient memory window!: start: 0xfd000000 end: 0xfebfffff size 0x80000000
(EE) Cannot find a replacement memory range
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Resource conflicts detected
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

My system has 512MB RAM and the GeForce FX 5200 Ultra has 128MB of RAM. This error occurs after the 1st reboot.

Go into your BIOS settings and make sure that there is a big enough AGP memory window allocated. You may do better with and "automatic" setting. BTW - More hardware details would be helpful, especially the make and model # of your motherboard.

Here are more hardware details of my system.

ASRock Intel 915GL MLB (include built-in video card)*
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 128MB
512MB Memory
WD 200GB HDD PATA
Intel P4 640 with HT (3.2Ghz)
AirStar HD-5000 HDTV Capture Card
PS Mouse and Keyboard (Logitech and Microsoft respectivily

*I don't believe this adapter is working. It uses main memory for the built in video display. When its active, available memory is reported at 504MB and not the 512MB reported when an AGP video card is used.

I know this doesn't help with the problem, but, I tried a different video card and was able to get X windows working. I was able to then perform the "post install" steps. The only item I changed was the video card. I now use a Geforce 6600.

Under WinXP, this card supports HDTV resolutions via a dongle out of a mini 9 pin connector. The dongle coverts the 9 pin connector into composite, s-video and compenent video.

Right now, text displays on both the vga monitor I have attached and the HDTV during boot up. Once X windows starts, the HDTV display goes blank.

My next question (why is this happening on my HDTV display?) will be the subject of another posting.
