I installed KnoppMyth on a box I built over this past weekend. The specs:

- Asus Athlon motherboard with nForce2 chipset, NO built-in video
- Matrox G400 dual-head
- 512 MB RAM
- Athlon XP 2000+
- On-board sound and SPDIF digital audio
- DVico Fusion 5 Gold Plus HD tuner card
- DVico Fusion Remote (MCE-type) and USB receiver


Here's what I'm up against: (1) KnoppMyth installs, but the remote doesn't work, the tuner only gives static when hooked up to a good cable line, and there's no sound at all. I looked at /var/logs/messages and found that the video card is properly detected, but apparently nForce2 motherboards are expected to use nVidia graphics cards. There's a complaint in the message log that it can't find an MX 440 card. By the way, I found another thread about someone enabling dual-head on my Matrox G400 card, and I'll follow those instructions when the time comes.

(2) The USB receiver is detected as a DVico device. Looking at the Lirc.conf file (i believe that's the one) it shows two DVico device entries--one for the MCE remote and one for another type. Neither one is commented out. When installing KnoppMyth I received a message that Lirc and two other programs are now loaded in the kernel. Should I simply comment out the entry in that file for the remote I'm NOT using, or do I have to recompile Lirc?

(3) The tuner card is properly detected, and the messages even call out it's proper name and says it's card type 33 (I believe; that info's at home and I'm writing from memory). Later on a message says it detected the tuner, and it's an LG XXXX-YYYY-ZZZ. Then it says the card type is being set to 60-something. A bit later it says something about using BT8x drivers. I'm more than a bit confused. Is my card type not being properly set, and if so, which .conf file do I change?

(4) The sound may be because the tuner's not being detected right, so I'm not worrying about that right now.

Now, I've installed Linux in the past, but have never gotten elbow-deep in its workings. I support Windows XP during my day job. I guess I'm saying I can understand the concepts if I can get the information or know where to look, and how the pieces fit and work together, but finding the info I need by reading through hundreds of messages is sado-masochistic, at best. And, unfortunately, the docs for KnoppMyth aren't always complete or precise enough for n00b's.

...after reading a response to another user question ("Try the Wiki)", I did just that. I'm sure it would be helpful if it were available...I got the following message:

"Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later. "

I wonder how much "later" is later, as in "The site owner has to buy more bandwidth as the'yve used it up for the month." Hmmmm....

Hopefully the wiki will be back up tomorrow, since it's the beginning of a new month.

I do not know about your HD tuner card specifically, but most HD tuners simply make the high definition digital data stream available, but put more simply, they simply dump the raw data straight to the hard disk. Standard definition cable television is not broadcast in a digital stream, you can only tune to your cable provider's HD stations, broadcast in some QAM format. Look under the posts in the HDTV section of the forum, there is an active thread from someone that figured out how to use atscscan to find his available stations that are from his cable provider.

XSecrets also frequently adds that comcast cable strips out pid data in their HD streams, so most versions of MythTV do not add the comcast channels.

Without more information from you, other than "All I get is static" it will be difficult for applicable and detailed advice to be given to you.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the HD section. The card is supposed to tune both analog and digital. Since I'm on Time Warner and a friend is using the same card under Windows, I don't think the Comcast "missing PID" would apply. Now, about the other problems...?
