I've just started trying to do my first MythTV installation.

I've gone into bios 5 times now, changed it to boot from my cd, saved my changes...............and it just keeps booting off the hard disk.

It's an HP with an AMD Athlon 1200. It has Windows ME on it now and at this rate will forever.

I've tried both the dvd and the cd drives.

Please help me........

I think you should try pulling the ide cable from the HD, and seeing if you can boot from the CD that way. Also, you need to have the CD in the drive very quickly, or already in the drive at power up...

Good luck,
Jason

I put the cd in before I shut down, after changing bios.

Unplugged the HD and got "Operating system not found".

Damn!

Anymore ideas? AAARRGGGHHH!!!

Thanks for the help!

Would the QuickBoot Mode, which is enabled, have anything to do with it? Just fishing.

In my experience, quick boot is more a startup speed choice that tells the computer it doesn't need to verify the integrity of the ram, and other built-in-test functions. I would speculate that your bios doesn't know how to communicate with the CD/DVD drive.

Maybe there's some sort of linux bootable floppy that you could use and then invoke the proper commands from the knoppmyth installation CD? I'm not really knowledgable about how to go about doing those things though. But I'm sure there are some people here that can give you those instructions.

Patience is a virtue. :)

I changed the quickboot mode, but seemed to make no difference.

When I go back into bios, the atapi cd-rom is still at the top, as if it is selected as the bootable drive, while the hard drive is at the bottom.

I've saved and exited from that screen, as well as from the exit screen, but it still keeps booting from the hd.

I'm trying to be oh so virtuous. :)

Upon further investigation, my computer isn't even seeing my drives. My floppy and HD are the only things showing on my computer. Gonna try to exchange some cables, etc.

I exchanged the IDE (?) cable, running from my board to my dvd and cd drives......and now all of mydrives show.

BUT........it still boots from the hard drive. I went back into bios and it appears to me that it is set to boot from the disk (cd is at the top of the list of drives).

The drive shows a disk called knoppmyth with 623 bytes on it.
It just won't boot from it.

Anymore ideas? could it be the disk? It wouldn't revert back to the HD if the disc I burned was bad, would it?

Thanks again for your help.

two things to try.

first, boot into ME or XP or whatever oyu said was installed, and see if you can browse the CD. If you can, then it's probably not a bad burn.

second (assuming you passed the first test), unplug the hd from the computer again (like earlier today) and see if you can boot from the cd then. You may need to have the CDROM on the ide channel that the HD was on, but I'm not certain.

623 bytes? sounds like the iso wasn't burned correctly. are you sure you burned as an image and not as data? did you burn at full speed? isos tend to not burn well that way, 4x-8x speed usually works best.

is your cd drive normal (non-writable) cd, cd-r or cd-rw? i've found out the hard way that non-writable and cd-r drives have trouble booting cd-rw media.

hth,
rob

Ok, this is probably a really stupid question.......what's the difference in an image and data? I did it as data, so I must have messed up there. I have nero, will that burn as an image?

It is a writable drive.
Thanks for the help, this sounds like it might be the problem.

edit....

Ok, I think I'm getting it.......wish me luck.
