Post subject:  Midnight Commander for MythTV

I installed midnight commander [actually for Smoothwall (http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/v ... php?t=2873)] and it seems to work great on MythTV.
I used wget to download it to the /tmp directory from http://atlas.kennesaw.edu/~rmw1202/files/mc.tar.gz
Then use tar -zxvf mc.tar.gz -C / to install it.
'Hope this helps, let me know if there are any problems, I just installed it and haven't had time to play with it yet, but it seems to be working fine.

Why not just use "apt-get install mc"?

Is what you installed a different version?

That way. Whatever. It works either way though, doesn' it ?
I'm just trying to help any other members here who may find the graphical interface a little easier to work with if one's new to Linux, not prove I'm a guru, which I'm obviously not. But thanks, this is the way I've learned quite a bit. I appreciate your help.

The problem with doing "manual" installs is that the package handling system (apt/dpkg) will not know about the program you installed (so there is a risk of conflicts and similar problems).

If the program is available as a Debian package it is always better to use that package. If you install it using an apt source there is also a good chance you will be able to automatically get any security updates etc.
