Had this problem after installing R5D1, so upgraded to myth 0.20, but the problem remains.

This happens most of the time, but not all of the time. I may have the problem when watching recorded programs, but not when watching live TV and vice versa. It happens more often than not.

System Specs
DELL GX260, 2GHz P4
256MB RAM
160GB HDD
using onboard video (intel), NIC
2 x Avermedia DVB-T 771 cards
PAL region (Australia).

Have previously had a very good working system on R5A22 but on a different computer (PIII 800Mhz)

Problem Description:
---------
When loading up the recorded program, or watching live TV, a short 1/2 sec burst of audio is played, and a black screen, then a few seconds later another short burst of audio, and maybe a frame of video or two are displayed. This repeats over and over until the back button is pressed, which takes some time to action, and eventually you go back to the previous menu.

CPU, Memory and soforth seem normal (i.e. mythfrontend is leaving plenty of CPU free, memory is not paging etc).

Running mythfrontend in debug mode provides the following relevant output.

Code:
mythtv@mythtv:~$ mythfrontend -v playback

Solved it. Seems the installer did a poor job of working out that my intel i845 onboard video doesn't have hardware accelerated OpenGL via the intel driver, and set the glx and GLcore modules to load in XF86Config-4.

For whatever reason under myth .19 and .20 (R5D1 base and R5D1 upgraded respectively), live TV plays normal, without trying to render to a GL surface (and thereby use mesaGL software rendered OpenGL), but pre-recorded TV does. Obviously software rendered GL surfaces are slow, and so frames kept being dropped in pre-recorded TV playback.

Eventually I discovered these modules were being loaded, and commented them out of the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Problem solved. TV and pre-recorded TV back to normal.
