So there are H.264 OTA stations in the US?

No, there are not. ATSC (North American broadcast as red321 notes) mandates MPEG2.

I think that DirecTV now uses H.264, but I don't count them as "over the air."

As for your other question, transcoding MPEG2 HD to H.264 certainly can save disk space, but then again, if your system can't play H.264 back adequately it might be a false economy.

I haven't done enough H.264 work under Linux to know what the issues are, both for playback or for transcoding. Sorry!

NP, thanks anyways. Like I said, it'll prolly be a little while 'fore I have the money to do the upgrade.

baishen78, for reference, I have an Athlon 64 3000+ with a gig of pc2700. I can playback H.264 720p no problem, around 70-80% cpu usage, but 1080p H.264 is a no go, it plays but drops lots of frames. Based on the specs in your sig, you should be able to playback 720p no problem and you may just barely be able to do 1080p, but I doubt it...

Okay, thanks. The only one I've tried so far is the BBC weather clip that was listed in one of the HD test sites. I forget exactly where I found it.
