I'd be suspicious that you're not running at 1024x768.

http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... ngLogFiles

In particular, any log dealing with X in /var/log/ . That wiki page mentions the XFree86 log; if your version of KnoppMyth is running X.org then the log file name is probably different but should still be in /var/log/

Hopefully you can decipher what modeline it's running at from the log. What I usually do is delete all the modelines that I _know_ I'm not going to use, then disable (with the # symbol) any modelines I don't want it to run at, leaving only my desired modeline. Then I restart. There is probably a much better way of doing this, but that's what I usually do. So I'd make sure all your modelines but your 1024x768 one are deleted/disabled, then reboot and see what happens.

that's a great idea and thanks for the log file location. (can't imagine I overlooked just removing out anything except 1024x768--so obvious)

I'll look at the logs first and then rem out stuff and see what happens.

Thanks very much!

Unfortunately the display size settings aren't going to do anything for you in this case. The only thing setting the display size does is control text size. Instead of telling Xorg you want text to be a certain DPI you can tell X how big your monitor/TV physically is and it will calculate a text DPI setting that is supposed to result in text that is a good readable size.

My understanding is that it also was how you specified aspect ratio--the link I posted was from the xine FAQ, under the heading "The aspect ratio of the video is wrong!"

Nevertheless, it didn't seem to work for hurnik (and the log seems to indicate he's running at 1024x768).

I guess what I would try next is feeding your TV a 720p modeline, which it would hopefully accept as if it was any other HD device set to output 720p (set-top box, external tuner, etc.)

I'm 99% sure it's a limitation of the TV's VGA input connector. I got my DVI to HDMI cable, plugged it in and I've got 720p now, "full" widescreen.

Other problems are cropping up with performance now (FF and Rewind), but I'll have to scrounge around for a fix for that.
