Old TVs like his (and mine) don't accept 720p, only 1080i or 540p. He mentioned he wasn't able to get 540p working but didn't say what didn't work. I think that's his best bet for getting things going...

I tried using a 540p modeline but my TV refuses to sync up with it. It only sync's up with 1080i. If I output 1024x768 or 800x600 that also works but it displays a 4:3 image centered in the 16:9 tube. So the only real output that will work is 1080i.

I also have all my settings as described previously overscan 0 (it's REALLY bad if that's not true), de-interlacing turned off, and I still don't know which is best Standard, libmpeg2, or XvMC.

Does anyone know what the text by XvMC where it says "this does not work well for HDTV sized frames" means? Also does anyone know, the libmpeg2 option says this works best on some AMD processors. Which ones is it best for, Athlon64 or AthlonXP?

The funny thing is even Standard def shows have the glitches in playback, however they are recorded in 1080i. So for example, the local news, or Oprah are not Hi-Def shows but they still have playback problems, since they are from CBS they are broadcast in 1080i.

Thanks,
Rick

I am almost positive that 540p is effectively identical to 1080i as far as the signal being sent to the TV is concerned, so if you can get it working with 1080i it should work as 540p.

If your machine has enough horsepower you can get by without XvMC. Like you said, you have effectively a Dragon machine, and I'm pretty sure those were selected to _not_ require XvMC for HD playback.

Can you post your 540p modeline. The one that I tried was 960x540p, and I believe that the TV displayed it as 4:3 in the middle of the 16:9 tube.

OK, here's mine. Note that I used "DisplaySize" to specify a 16:9 TV. Also, note I'm still using an older version of KM, thus I'm still using XF86Config-4 instead of xorg.conf

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Monitor0"
        DisplaySize  240    135
        HorizSync    31.5 - 37.9
        VertRefresh  59.9 - 60.1
        ModeLine "960x540" 42.187 960 1056 1104 1248 540 547 548 563 +hsync +vsync
EndSection

I had heaps of fun getting my Tv to display correctly but I found the following link very helpful and there is a link in there for a modeline generator that got me sorted out http://www.linuxis.us/linux/media/howto ... ration.htm
I still have a small issue with fine lines in the video but that is caused by the Nvidia drivers -old drivers are clear - so bear in mind the drivers.

I just re-read the description of the problem you are seeing, and I remembered that there is one scenario where I get some amount of "tearing" / "jerkyness" in scenes with a lot of panning. When I am playing back a hidef recording and I have the closed-captions displaying, I sometime get this type of problem. It always clears when I turn off the captions. Not sure if this helps, but thought I'd provide the info just in case...

Hi all,

I have upgraded to R5F27 and done all the tweaks listed in http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... imizeHowTo
.

Right now 720p stations like ABC and FOX play back flawlessly in 1080i, however 1080i stations like CBS and NBC have smooth audio with occasionally stuttering or jumpy video for a half second or so. Then the video is smooth until it stutters again.

I have also played with all the sync to Vertical Retrace options in both nvidia-settings and the myth settings.

I have found that libmpeg2 is the best playback option which is not what I expected. I expected XvMC to be the best option, but that one plays back the worst. Standard XvMC stutters audio and video even with 720p material.

Does anyone have a Athlon 64 3200+, NForce 4 chipset, 1 GB memory, 300G HD, and NVidia 6150 based motherboard working with 1080i output? This is SO close to the Dragon hardware that I can't believe that I can't get it to work.

I also purchased a NVidia 6200 TC PCI-X card and tried it and it works NO differently than the on-board 6150 video.

Does anyone have any ideas?

HELP

Thanks,
Rick Wirch

I don't have that hardware, but perhaps an idea.
Will the same recording stutter at the same point, every time? If so, maybe it's a signal issue.

BTW, 1080i was giving me fits, and I'm much happier outputting everything as 720p, as Marc A does. Maybe someday when I get a true, 1:1 pixelmapped 1080p display, I'll move back up. But for my old CRT RPTV, 720 works much better. I'd be really surprised if your TV can't handle 720p at all, as that's a valid output for any sort of HD device (external tuner, HD DVD, etc..).
How are you connected? I'm using VGA to the VGA/Component box sold by Mythic.TV.

See the first two posts on this thread -- http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... video+scan -- could this be the problem you are having?

I've experienced the same problem as Marc, but my setup does not permit double-rate scanning which precludes Bob deinterlacing. (At least that's what my log tells me.) My setup is working 99.9% of the time as is, so I'm fairly pleased. I'm using OpenGL video timing. I picked "realtime priority" on my settings, but the log says I'm not getting it because it would require "SUID as root".

From my mythfrontend log:

Hi all,

Thanks for this last idea. The solution (non-intuitive) is that I need to turn on de-interlacing to display interlaced video properly on an interlaced output. If I playback 720p it turns into 1080i properly and plays back, but if I want to display 1080i on 1080i I need to use linear, or bob2x de-interlacing to make it not jump and jerk on playback.

Now, all I need to do is figure what can be done to make my wife like the Mythbox and not hate it any longer. This might be more difficult to solve.

I also need to figure out what to get to make my Logitech Harmony 520 remote work with the Mythbox. It is weird, I got an Infra-red keyboard/mouse and have that hooked up, but the Logitech cannot be read by the Infra-red receiver for the keyboard. I probably need to buy a streamzap remote and throw away the remote part to get another receiver that will work.

Thanks,
Rick :)

Err, the Harmony is a learning remote. Get it to learn the codes from your keyboard, and then your IR receiver should be able to read the codes it sends.

If you are lucky, someone else might have already setup your keyboard as a PC device in the Harmony database, but I didn't have any luck with my AirBoard - I had to learn all the important keys.

Rick, I'm glad that things are working but I have to say that everything you're described implies that your display is operating as a progressive scan device, not an interlaced display device. Three quick questions:

1. What is the brand and model of your display device?

2. How is it connected to your PC? ie, DVI, VGA, Component video connector, etc.

3. Please post the output of executing the following:

Code:
egrep -i "Virtual screen size|Setting mode" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thanks!

Marc

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I am using a Toshiba 34" tube HDTV that only has a component video input. I am using a 6150 based motherboard that has a dongle with component video out. My Toshiba 34hf81 TV only accepts 1080i. If I attempt to use 720p from my Samsung HDTV tuner the tv won't sync. When I did the egrep on the log it said that my virtual screen size is 1920x1080.

Yes, the Harmony is a learning remote. When I have it learn the signals from the keyboard it says that it gets it, but when I try to use the remote after the learning procedure it does nothing. I am guessing that the IR receiver for the keyboard does not pick up the frequency that the Harmony outputs or something. The keyboard receiver plugs into the PS2 keyboard and mouse ports.

Thanks all,
Rick

I have sometimes had similar problems. Try:
1) Having the keyboard further away from the remote when learning
2) Learning in a dark room (esp. not during the day when the sun is shining in)
3) A different key-press regime. Try a few seconds (so that it auto-repeats), or maybe just a very short single press.
You might find that one of those gives you a working code. Or, search the Logitech database to see if anyone has a PC with the same sort of keyboard. (someone else may have been able to learn the code).

Of course, you could be right about the frequency, but it is unlikely - most of these things work use the same IR system (some Marantz remotes use a custom system).

I have one device that I cannot learn. It is an air conditioner. The problem is that the IR communication is two-way - not just from the remote to the aircon, but also back again with the current status. Does your keyboard have numlock and status lights on it?
