G'day all,

I am trying to setup mythtv for dvb-s in the uk using a skystar 2 card to get the free to air channels.

And I am having real problems!

I can get bits of it to work by various scanning techniques but I can't get a clean channel config.

Most of the information seems to be either...
- US based
- people using a digibox
- people using dvb-t freeview

If I use the internal scanner then I get lots of scrambled channels.
But tv_grab_uk_rt seems to work.

If I use dvbscan and import the resultant file after removing the scrambled channels (which takes a while) I seem to have a problem with using tv_grab_uk_rt and mythfilldatabase to actually fill the epg.

is there any step by step guide on how to do this? Or maybe someonw can give me a dump of their channel table. Once I have set it up correctly I could write a script to do it.
The biggest issue seems to be linking the xmlid with the channel name since the name don't match, I imagine a cross over table is needed.

Does the EIT scanner work?
What version of KM are you using, as the MythTV scanner seems to be much better in R5E50. If you are using the internal scanner, there should be an option to ignore encrypted channels.
My setup is not the same as yours, but I'm using the xmltv listings for my Freeview channels. There should be an option to ignore
I think the best way is to create your channels then use the web interface to populate the XMLtv IDs from a list.

G'day Bruce,

I did not see an option to ignore encrypted channels (does not mean it is not there though).

I am not sure the EIT scanner does work... it scan and adds channels but I don't think I could actually use the data. I will give this another go in a minute, I will truncate the channel table first though.

I didn't really want to update all the data manually, but if that is the solution then I would rather create a crosslink table and write a script to it, that way it is easy to keep uptodate and of more benefit to others. The actual problem I have is matching the channel names up, some channels are obvious and some are not.

I think we will see more of these type of issues as terrestial TV starts to be phased out.

PS: KM version in sig.

I am absolutely hopeless at this!

I can not get it to work.

Why o why is there not a simple set of instructions?
I must be the only one in the UK who is doing this!

No error mesages. the internal scan does not find all the channels that dvbscan finds, yet dvbscan has no way of removing/ignoring encrytped channels.

If you use dvbscan there is no simple way to tie the the xml stuff to the channels it has found.

Import the channels.conf seems to have the same problem.

everytime I use the myth channel scan it finds a few more channels (whats all that about)

If I ever get it working I will create a table that canbe imported with once script that will load the channel data correctly.

As you can tell I am pretty frustrated with the whole thing.

here is a question...
Is anybody in the UK, using a PCI card with a sat disk connected to it to watch sky unencrytped transmissions and using the (memorably named) tv_grab_uk_rt to update there schedules, if so, how did you get it to work.
That would seem to be a simple question.

God knows what happens why I try to integrate it with my existing pvr150/350 setup, I haven't even got that far yet.

I wil have been trying to get this to work for nearly a year now.

Did you put in a delay factor in the Card setup? In 5D1 I could never get the channel scan to work correctly for DVB-T, but the dvbscan (as it was then) would find the muxes. In 5E50, the channel scan worked well, but I had to put 50ms delay in the DVB card setup.

hi,

do understand you very well ;-))

which knoppmyth distro do you have?
i have r5e50 and the technisat skystar 2 tv dvb-s card (pci-card) connected to an universal lnb directly; the dish is looking at astra 19.2 and i intend to get the fta channels only.

upto now my machinery does receive the sat, and shows it in a tiny (5 x 5 cm) pip screen on my monitor..

when you have this very km-distro, i may be able to give you some help..

waiting for your answer,

rob

I suspect that pretty much everyone in the UK is using either a pvr based card with a sky box, or a dvb-t card :(

What channels are you trying to watch? I've just installed with a skystar2 on 19.2 and had no problems.

The extra channels that are appearing are due to mythfilldatabase. You need to add --update as an extra option to stop this.

## hi,

you would be able to reach a status of big fame when you were able and willing to write a step-for-step guide on this (the install no problems)..

please have one or more looks on
members . lycos . nl / driepoot99 / knoppmyth
(without blanks)

there is my full setup procedure in pics, and ends in nowhere land...
what.txt (bottom) contains info about the hardware

would like to hear where you differ in your setup, as you seem to have the same dvb-s card and want to look at the same satellite.

hope you can say 'this is your fault'

thanks,
rob

I had a look the pictures you posted. A used eit only as my video source. I didn't do any mythfilldatabase stuff because i don't think it's needed with eit only (please correct me if i'm wrong)

You only have a 8mb graphics card. Could that be the problem? Everything else looks correct.

## this would be very strange, because before this setup, i had the same KM-version on a computer with a comparable mobo, a p2 333 (or 350) processor, and a Matrox video card with only 4 Mb (!), and in that setup i could see a preview (small) screen in ''watch recordings", and i could 'enlarge' that in 'watch recording' to full screen (was the same monitor too), and the recording was displayed full screen (but with very frequent drop-outs).

so mem (4 Mb, 8 Mb cannot be the cause for showing nothing).

but you had as a video source 'eit' selected???

The video source just gets the now and next epg data off the sat.

In video Source setup

Set XMLTV listings grabber to EIT only.
Set Channel Freq table to europe-west.

Go into mythweb and see if it stars pulling any epg data down. It takes a minute before the grabber sets in.

Otherwise I carn't see anyway wrong with your setup.

## maybe a 'nono' question, but 'how do i get into mythweb'??
