All I really need is video playback with a decent video signal quality
as you get with the pvr350. Mythtv has a lot of features I don't
need.

Has anyone configured the 350 as an output using either xine or mplayer?

I am running Ubuntu 7.04 desktop. Mplayer works ok for displaying
video on the VGA, but what I really need is video out of the pvr-350.

I am OK with audio working on the sound card, as long as the
audio is in sync.

Thanks :?:

I believe you can use xine -v and then tell it which video driver to use and the same with mplayer, mplayer -vo. Check the command lines for further options.

Thanks Girkers,

The next (dumb?) question is how do I get the proper plugin?

I'm trying xine first, for no particular reason, just a place to
start.

I found some source code for a pvr-350 plugin written for VDR, but
I don't know if I can use that here.

Any ideas as far as that would be appreciated.

I've gotten to the point where I can dd if=/dev/dvd of=/dev/video16 and
play video. This is using no player at all, there is no audio of course.

So, the hardware works.

This is a non CSS disc we produced here, so I hope I'm not in
violation of any forum rules by mentioning that. You could not
play a CSS disc this way anyway.

Your suggestion at least sends me down the right road, so I appreciate
that!

To reply to my own question once again, I found a way to use VLC
to play video and AC3 audio through the PVR-350 outputs.

Go to the "wizard" under the "file" pulldown in the GUI, set it up
to transcode/copy to a file, choose no video transcoding and
audio transcoding to MPEG (since this is what the PVR wants to
see). Your output file is /dev/video16.

Now I have video and audio out of the pvr-350, all I need is
closed caption on line 21 coming out of the card.

I am trying to set up a system to replace the tape master
in a small VHS duplication facility. We'll need CC on line 21 of
the VHS tape.
