I am surveying the market currently to determine the interest for a component video capture card. It should be able to capture 720p and 1080i analog. It would capture in H.264/AVC and probably AAC. I would imagine it would cost around $200. How may takers?

First blush; sounds too good to be true.

I think it takes a but more than $200 worth of computing power to go from 1080i to H.264

Add an IR blaster, and it could be the ultimate Cable-box controller.

That does sounds great. I have yet to see any component recorder.

Don't take this the wrong way, but your anticipated specs are so far from today's technology that it gives me a chuckle.

Capturing HD video from component input and compressing it on the fly is such a daunting task that it does not exist for less than $50,000 today. TV studios have such encoders but nothing exists in the videophile market, let alone the hobbyist.

Let's do some math:

1920x1080x30 frames/sec = 62,208,000 pixels/sec.

Assume we want 8-bit encoding (1 byte) on each of the three component cables:

62,208,000 pixels/sec x 3 bytes/pixel = 186,624,000 bytes/sec.

So your encoder has to convert analog to digital data at 187M bytes/sec! Or, if you have an A/D per channel (likely) 62M bytes/sec per channel.

But this isn't even the hard part.

Now you have to encode this data stream into MPEG2 or MPEG4 in real time. Think of the difficulty we now have in DEcoding HD for playback using a software solution, and remember that DEcoding these formats is orders of magnitude easier than ENcoding the same format.

I'm not aware of any dedicated processor in existence today that can approach this task. You are years away from having an economical solution to this task.

EDIT:
I see I got punked into responding to an ancient post! Oh well, the math still works.

If it could capture to the same mpeg2 standard as broadcast hdtv streams, it could be the frontend to an atsc hdtv video modulator, which would allow you to watch your component-out hd mythtv on any atsc tv in your house just by tuning it to the right channel. I would definitely get one! You would still need something that can do 8vsb RF modulation. I don't know where you would get that from.

That would solve the issue of getting HD from satellite, opening up options for those who want HD options aside from cable monopolies.
