This is a really noob question, but what kind of card do you use to record the output of a highdef box?

My father has a pvr150 working but he's just using s-video from the hd box to the pvr150. Is there a component capture card or something out there that can record the stream being sent to it?

I've got this SD stuff figured out...HD...not so much!

You can get a component capture card at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/353129-REG/AJA_KONALS_Kona_LS_12_Bit.html

That was a simple google search, so it may be too (expensive|much) for your needs. It looks really good, though :-)

Cheers

Yep! That's a lot more expensive.

Hmm...so how do you get the signal from the STB to the MythTV box in HD?

Yes. Get an HD capture card for your Myth box and ditch the STB ;-)

Why do you need to capture an external digital signal?

OK, why not buy a Satellite tuner card? It'd still cost you the least amount of $$ (easily).

Just a note about the Kona card: most cards like this capture uncompressed HD, therefore we're talking huge file sizes.

I capture uncompressed 720x486i SD video at work and that runs about 90GB/hr. I think 1280x720p would be somewhere around 375GB/hr.

I think the point was that the price was ridiculously high (huhn, only a kilo$, they've come down...). If you're spending that much for a capture card a multi-Tb disk array isn't a big increment. ;-)

But isn't the signal encrypted? Isn't that why we need a STB?

You need to read more: There are several digital satellite capture cards that allow your subscriber card to be part of the deal. The only thing you need worry about is the encryption algorithm. Consequently, all satellite services in Australia (except Foxtel) are possible through a Satellite card (Foxtel bought the company who invented their encryption algorithm so it could never be made public).

Google a bit and you'll probably find an easy solution and obviate the need for a satellite STB. The cards are usually less than $150. I was thinking of getting satellite a month or so ago and as long as I avoid Foxtel, it's trivial to get the digital signal directly into my Knoppmyth machine. Some satellite tv providers offer the option of a STB or not: I take this as acceptance of alternatives.

Good luck

Oh, well, there's so much on here I got a little confused. See my parents have a Starchoice HD satellite...so, now I got to figure out what card they need so they can keep using there system.
