I'm putting a hardware list together for an HD mythbox. It'll be based on a Intel Core2 Duo chip but after seeing the hardware specs on the Dragon 2.0 system which is geared for HD content, they have three different nVidia based cards users can chose from:

GF 6200LE (64 megs mem)
GS 7300GS (128 megs mem)
GS 7600GS (256 megs mem)

So, for those of you out there viewing 720p and 1080p content, what video card are you using and how much memory is on the board? Obviously, my goal is to have skip-free playback.

Thanks for the info as usual!

I have played back HDTV content with

A) GeForce FX 5500 w/ 128Mb
B) GeForce 6200LE w/ 256Mb
C) GeForce 6150 (onboard Asus M2NPV-VM) w/ 128Mb shared memory

I should think any of the cards you listed would be adequate for HDTV playback.

I have the GF 6200LE and have no problem with 720p content. I think 1080p would probably work fine as well, but I don't have a 1080p TV, so I haven't tried.

I'm using a *fanless* XFX 7600GS with an HDMI output (not converted DVI). Probably overkill, but works fantastic on 1080p.

I no longer have it installed in a machine, but I have used a 128mb Ti4200 Nvidia card to view HD content in the past, with my HD tuner card.
No problems.
(Using the proprietary NVidia drivers- using vesa/basic drivers, it was unwatchable.)

I have also watched HD video stored on disk with no problem on those cards.
I currentlt use 6600 GTs, a 7300 GT and a 7600 GS, and of course there are no issues with them either. :)

Oh- my laptop, with onboard ATI Radeon Express 200m (I think that is the model #) has had no issues with any type of HD content @720p.

In truth, I don't think I have had problems with 1080i with any but the laptop either, and even that was ok, just occasional brief stutters when running other apps along with video content.

Where did you get a 7600GS with HDMI outputs? All I can find is Dual DVI outputs. Can you include the brand and supplier?
Thanks,
Ziggy

EDIT: Never mind, Google is your friend! (7600GS + HDMI) I didn't know these existed!

I use an off brand old MX-440 AGP (rev a3), but my output is to an SD TV so I don't know how much this helps you. I can tell you that all the 'W' modes (stretch, fill, zoom, @16x9, @4x3) work without pauses in live tv.

My local ATSC channels are 720p (1280x720@60) and 1080i (1920x1080@30). I think I am guessing right...

Top says I am using 35% of one of the CPU's (17.5% of both) for mythfrontend, probably because it is mpeg2 so the Nvidia really helps out. mythbackend is only 2%.

I have an Intel 3.4ghz dual core. CPU may be your biggest issue after using an Nvidia AGP (or maybe PCIE) card.

I have a GeForce 6200TC 256MB (64MB on Board) with a AMD 64 3800+ (2.4 GHz) and anything I record in HD plays fine. The rips I have are hit and miss. I have a 1080p rip that plays alright in xine but is unwatchable in any other program I have (vlc, mplayer, mythplayer, ad nauseam). It still has the occasional hiccup, but it isn't terrible. One 720p rip pretty much goes to crap about 10 minutes into it. The audio gets way out of sync and the buffer has to reload or something every little while. Unwatchable. There are some issues with green artifacts but I'm hoping a new h.246 codec will TCOB.

Which card did you end up using? Did it require much tinkering? I am planning on building a completely new system for HDTV recording. I would like to choose an appropriate video card that is known to work out-of-the-box. (I'm not well versed in troubleshooting driver issues, etc). Your experience may help others like myself.

I use an EVGA GEFORCE FX6200LE on a Pentium-D930 dual core 3.0ghz system for 720P output -- works great.

I recently experimented with an EVGA GEFORCE FX5200 on a dell optiplex GX270. It worked, but there are some caveats here:

1. 720P display, 720p content, no deinterlace: Works fine.

2. 720P display, 1080i content, 1 field deinterlace: works fine.

3. 720P display, 1080i content, bob2x deinterlace: Fails with a message in Xorg.0.log -- something to the effects of unable to run at the requested 2x rate.

Both systems are using Knoppmyth R5.5.

In NTSC/ATSC land, bob2x is the deinterlace method of choice as it is able to deal with both interlacing methods utilized by the studios. My guess is that the other "2x" methods introduced with R5.5 would also work well for both interlacing methods.

I got a 6200 w/ 256 meg onboard, although I haven't get the HD set yet and haven't had a chance to test out HD content.

Looks as though its a codec issue after all. Everything I throw at this machine plays wonderfully natively in Myth after the upgrade to 5.5
