I haven't looked into the multi-core algorithm in mplayer/ffmpeg but I would have assumed it was to support the multi-threading in H.264. If the stream you have is single threaded (typical as with the HD-PVR) then my guess is the newer mplayer/ffmpeg won't give you an advantage.

But that is just my guess. Let us know how it turns out; it will be useful information.

If you do want to try it here is a Ubuntu HOWTO on how to build mplayer with ffmpeg-mt to do the multi-threading.

Of course you may run into problems because of the differences between ubuntu and arch but perhaps you can slog through those and get an mplayer that you can try.

@neutron68 - did you upgrade to R6 and mythtv 0.22 yet? How does your 1212 work with them if so?

@djb61230 - Or see if this PKGBUILD from the AUR can be adapted to work with LinHES

I am still running my Knoppmyth R5.5 system as my production box. I'm pretty comfortable with Debian and R5.5 and am not comfortable jumping into the unknown (Arch Linux). It has taken me 3 years to get familiar with the Debian flavor of Linux and Knoppmyth and I am reluctant to get into a position where I need to relearn how to do everything I've learned - like lirc remote control codes and the control of my HD satellite receiver. I fear that a switch will force me to spend my weekends relearning how to do it all again. You know?

For playing with the HD-PVR, I built a clone of my production box and have several hard drives in removable drawers for experimenting.

One hard drive has Mythbuntu 9.10 on it. It's running myth 0.22 and VDPAU. Mythbuntu is Debian-based (with a GUI interface and the Synaptic Package Manager) so most of what I learned using Knoppmyth carries over to Mythbuntu.
In Mythbuntu, the HD-PVR records HDTV shows from the HD satellite receiver when you use the timer. It doesn't work with the Watch TV command (live tv). Playback is a bit choppy - even with my dual core AMD 4200+ processor and nvidia 8400GS card. I'm still experimenting with the VDPAU settings to find a smooth playback setting.

Does LinHES have myth 0.22 code in it now? Is the HD-PVR working without needing any extra downloading and compiling of code?
If so, I can slide another hard drive into the drawer and play with LinHES too.

Eric

Yes, it's an option.

Yes, you just need to install 0.22 and the latest v4l (packages also provided).

Post subject:  Bitrate

Need to ask kind of a dumb question here but Google isn't getting me anywhere:

How do I change the recording bitrate? The only place in MythTV settings I've found is in Recording Profiles, where it has 3: 3000k/4000k, 6000k/7000k, 9000k/10100k. However the values reported by v4l2-ctl during a recording do not match any of these:

Code:
             video_bitrate_mode (menu) : min=0 max=1 default=1 value=0 flags=update
                  video_bitrate (int)  : min=1000000 max=13500000 step=100000 default=6500000 value=4500000
             video_peak_bitrate (int)  : min=1100000 max=20200000 step=100000 default=9000000 value=6000000

Could somebody please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I've been running R6/0.22 for a while now so this info may not sync up with you but I figured I would mention it.

I had to setup my own Recording Profile for the HD-PVR(s). The trick was to name the Recording Profile "Default". Then you can edit it to adjust the "Low", "Medium" and "High" resolutions. I *BELIEVE* when it finds a 720p stream, it will use the "Medium" values. For 1080i it will use "High". I assume 480p it will use "Low" but I'm not sure because I've never fed it 480p.

What I do is always set my set top box output to 720p. I maxed out the "Medium" because I wanted to best bitrate it could do.

So again...the trick was to create a profile called "Default" and adjust the three resolutions. Especially if you are using a native-pass thru with your set top box. I decided just to go with 720p because that is what my displays are anyway...

Hope this helps.... :)
