@alien - thanks for the suggestions, but the problem is most noticeable with viewing avi/mkv files in mplayer, so the playback profiles won't help me there.
@Martian - I did and you're correct (the command is indeed nvidia-settings). I have messed around with enabling/disabling all sorts of options within the util, but to no avail :(

Having ruled out the hardware, it must be some setting somewhere... In an attempt to understand this, I went over to the darkside and installed mythbuntu 8.10 on the spare drive. Guess what? SAME PROBLEM! Mythbuntu uses Xfce so this happens under fluxbox and xfce, but for some reason, not Gnome.

Any ideas?

I figured it out! The problem is the -vo xv switch! If I omit it, there are no distortions!

Now the question is why? Am I missing something in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf or..???

What command is this switch attached to and what file is it found it?

The standard commandline for mplayer is: mplayer-resumer.pl -fs -zoom -vo xv -vf eq2 %s

You can find it in your mplayer setup in mythfrontend.
