Post subject:  pcHDTV HD-3000 capture problems

I've been blaming my HD signal quality situation for the problems that kept me from getting a clean HDTV stream, but it's starting to look like a a problem with the HD-3000 card. Feeding it from coax signals that look great on my TV (swapping cables) the captured image won't go more than a second without breaking up. The problem is definitely in the recordings rather than the playback, but there don't seem to be any errors in the BE or system log files and I'm running out of things to try.

I'm just about ready to pick up a new HD capture device of some kind and if that works, ship the HD-3000 back to the pcHDTV guys to see if they can tell what's wrong with it.

Troubleshooting suggestions? Off the cuff ideas? Recommendation for capture devices (The HDHomerun would either require adding another GigE switch to my network out in the living room or some screwy coax cabling to the office so that's a ways down the list), ...

The logs seem to agree that it's corrupted straight off the capture card...

Also the signal strength is good (consistently >90%), but the S/N ratio is right around 4db, and other folks with problems have reported the same range. Could somebody with clean QAM reception post their signal strength and S/N numbers? Thanks...

I don't use QAM, but if you want some OTA data points for 5 local stations with an HD3000 on R5.5:
88% 3.9db
85% 3.9db
80% 3.9db
77% 3.8db
72% 3.8db
They all record fine for me. I'm just guessing here, but maybe your log errors might be referring to atsc closed caption errors. Is there some way to disable captioning?

From googling "ac-tex damaged":
Some guy in this old thread seems to think it was caused by a noisy power supply in his computer and that it worked fine in another computer.

Another guy saw these errors while comflagging. Do you have comflagging enabled while capturing?

Some other guy thought it was a pci bus bursting problem (motherboard problem)

Just trying to help brainstorm here. Good luck.

Great data points and ideas. The fact that your S/N ratios are right about the same place as mine may well mean that was a red herring, which is a relief since there really isn't much more I can do about that. I'm going to go try the other ideas out ASAP.

Thanks!
