keep in mind that one of the variables here is the point in time the recording was made.

I only switched the production box over to 6.03 in late October, based on some key file time stamps it was on 2010-10-24. Since I don't have any old Fox recordings available, everything was tested with both R5.5 and R6.03 using live broadcasts, or playing back fresh "live tv" category stuff as recordings.
Hi tjc,
Interesting that R5.5 and R6.03 showed the same playback results in Boston. Since they are the same, a current recording using R6.03 is fine, then.
Thanks,
Eric

Post subject:  TO ALL

I'm working with the technical people at the Fox affiliate in Minneapolis. I've sent them a number of Fox/KMSP recordings made with Knoppmyth R5.5. They have seen that recordings made pre-summer 2010 behave differently than recordings made post-summer 2010. They are interested to know what mythtv recordings from Fox stations in other cities are like.

I'm making this request of everyone who has a Fox affiliate they can receive over-the-air (this includes mattbatt, brfransen, and tjc):

Could you make some short recordings of Fox network programs (not local news, etc.) with your Knoppmyth and LinHES boxes and post them somewhere I could download them? (for example, Sendspace.com is a free upload site, but limits uploaded files to 300MB or less).
A 2 minute recording off a Fox affiliate will be under 300MB.
Please note the date, time and Fox affiliate the recording was made from.
If you use a free service like Sendspace, you can put my email address as the file recipient:
neutron68 at yahoo dot com

Thanks for your help.

Eric,

This may NOT be what you want to hear....

I DL'ed the three post-summer clips in the OP, and they all play FINE on my 'home-brewed' version of MythTV 0.20.2 (fixes).

No stutters, no pauses, great audio...played fine using the internal Myth player. I don't use mplayer within the MythTV system.

The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3, with onboard Nvidia 6150 chip.

I am using the Nvidia driver 190.42....NO XvMC acceleration used. Standard playback with libmpeg2 and 2x deinterlace.

This issue may boil down to a compilation issue with the mythtv software or the base OS libraries.

My 'OS?' Slackware 13.0, 64 bit with the 2.6.30-10 kernel. No specific tweaks to the MythTV build. It is compiled as a 64bit app.

My Intel 32 bit MBE can't playback any HD stream without stuttering, so I can't check the files on that system. :(

I can't point the finger at the MythTV code. Maybe upgrade the nvidia driver and see if that helps.

Post subject:  nvidia driver?

Hi Larry,

I'm not sure if you read all the posts in this thread? Maybe not?
I can tell you this: Knoppmyth R5.5 worked fine for Fox recordings for 1.5 years.
Like your philosophy, I didn't change software versions on anything after I got it working. Then, Fox made a change in summer 2010 and my playback of Fox shows was ruined for this R5.5 machine.

Do you still have a Knoppmyth machine running? I see at one time you had R5F27 running (circa Sept.2007). Did you abandon Knoppmyth and go to a Slackware-mythtv system?

I'm not sure if your nvidia driver idea is helpful or not.
Maybe the Knoppmyth and LinHES experts can chime in with opinions?

Based on what I know of mpeg playback, I think this stuttering is more related to the version of ffmpeg that is in the particular version of the built-in mythtv player. Brittney believes that the built-in mythtv player uses it's own version of ffmpeg - separate from the version of ffmpeg you have loaded on the machine, for transcoding, etc.

My current machine is running Knoppmyth R5.5 (circa July 2008). (mythtv 0.21-fixes)
I just checked (cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version) and I have nvidia driver 173.14.09 Wed Jun 4 23:43:17 PDT 2008.
I can't find any reference in the forum to what nvidia version Cecil compiled into the R5.5 release.

Do you have a Fox affiliate in your city, Larry? Can you make a short (2 minute) over-the-air recording for me? (see desired specs above)

Thank you Britney! I'm going to share this file with the KMSP technical people ASAP.

Eric,

Yes, I've moved my KM systems to my homebrewed Slack/Myth to get it working on a 64 bit OS base. It was mainly to allow me to run the SMP Folding@Home cores. I have three quad cores crunching away.

I've been working on one of my test PC's and I'll see if running a LiveCD of KnoppMyth 5.5 will show any difference in the playback. I'm looking to build another AMD box, but I can't find any deals on a good old M2NPV-VM board. :(

I'll see about creating a file of the local FOX station. My OTA reception of Fox is spotty, but I'll get you something in the next couple of days. I'll edit this post when available.

----- E D I T ----- 01/13/2011

ok....

I have three mpg captures of my local FOX station (WPGH-53). The files are 400M, 1G, and 6G in size. I have them on a local system and my outbound bandwidth is only 768kb. Please be kind to my DSL line! :)

To answer your LiveCD question....

Let it boot, then select 'frontend' Fill in all the needed info, and it should work. I re-dl'ed the ISO and was trying to figure it out myself. Alas, it's running MythTV 0.21, and that doesn't play nice with my 0.20.2 setup. Hopefully, it'll work better for you!

If you get the R5.5 cd running as a live cd, let me know how. I tried this weekend and didn't see any menu item for such operation!
I posted a question in the Installation section of the forum, but have not had any responses. Maybe R5.5 can't act as a live cd??

OK. Thanks for making the effort.

Eric,

Re-built a fresh R5.5 system on a Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 board (with the Nvidia 6150) ... Your MPG captures play fine. AMD Athlon 4200 X2 processor, 1GB DDR2 667 RAM and 256M framebuffer for the video card. It does NOT support XvMC, so I can't test that for you. This is the stock install from CD...no tweaking at all.

I checked playback using mplayer and the internal Myth player...both good.

Any luck with viewing my captures?

Hi Larry.

No. I didn't know you'd posted any captures until just now - 1-28-2011. Since you didn't post a new forum message about the captures, no alert e-mail was generated and sent out. Thus, it appeared there had been no action in this thread since my last posting.
I just tried your link and got a browser error screen.

I appreciate your willingness to help. Could you post smaller files? 1GB - 6GB files are literally going to take several days of continuous download to get from you.
Maybe you could manually set your mythtv scheduler to make a few 2 minute recordings during the prime time viewing hours, to catch Fox network shows? The files will be around 100MB per minute in size. (2 minutes = 200MB)

I posted several video files on the first post of this thread. Most have the Fox problems, and 1 is free of the Fox problems.
Which files did you test? You were not specific.
Did you also try the VLC Player test?
What version of nvidia driver is in stock R5.5?
What is your monitor modeline in xorg.conf? (screen resolution)
Did you also try Brittney's sample file from the Sioux Falls Fox affiliate?

I tried Brittney's sample file from the Sioux Falls Fox affiliate:
- stutters with the built-in Mythtv player in R5.5
- won't play past the first frame using VLC player (in both Windows and Linux pcs)

I've not heard back from the technical staff at KMSP since sending them Brittney's file.

Eric,

just DL the 400M file. If you're on Dial-Up, I feel for ya! :(

I tried ALL three of your captures. They play fine on my stock CD install of R5.5 with the Nvidia driver. Sorry, blew away the install to load the R7 test CD, which, hung after the reboot. Reloaded.... Nvidia driver 173.14.09.

OT: "Preparing "sysname" for life." Very BAD for US English: Computers aren't beings. OK?

Sorry. No VLC testing. I'll see if I can check that out.

Nope, I'm not on dial-up.
If you do the math:
a 6GB file will take about 18 Hours 38 Minutes to transfer at 768 kb/s (DSL upload speeds).
a 4GB file will take about 12 Hours 25 Minutes to transfer at 768 kb/s (DSL upload speeds).

By the way, your server is still not accessable. I get a Proxy Error.

It's Monday Jan.31 and I can now connect to your server. I'm pulling down the first file in the list.

Hi Larry, I got your 400MB file down ok.

It appears to be a late night rurun of the NBC show My Name Is Earl, thus this isn't a prime time Fox network program.

This rerun recording stutters in the R5.5 mythtv player just as the other post-summer 2010 Fox files I have do. Mplayer plays it without stutters. Surprisingly, VLC Player plays your file ok - rather than freezing on the first frame as the other post-summer 2010 Fox files I have do.

I'd still like to see a sample of a Fox prime time show.

Well I've got good news and bad news.
The good news is that I upgraded my mythbox to a dual core amd 64 part (about a year newer than my old chip) and upgraded the ram to 2 Gb and with the new motherboard I was able to get a nvidia gt430. With all those upgrades I can play back the fox programs without stutter !!!!!! yay
The bad news is that the files are still broken it's just that I am overpowering them with hardware...
The superbowl ended up being a 24 Gb file that a running time of 00:00:00 and wont play on Windows.
Fox is doing something shady but now I know why some people are having issues and others aren't. I have the gt430 doing all the hard work on playback.
