Post subject:  Australian HDTV Users

To all MythTV Users in Australia with working HD/SD Rigs.

What TV cards are you using in your rigs to get everything working? I'm about to purchase and was wondering what works for people using our TV system. Any comments on which card(s) you have and any problems you had with them would be great.

Thanks.

My home machine (been working for SD since mid 2004) has cheap old TwinHan VisionPlus DVB-T cards.

My test machines at work have a DVICO FusionHDTV lite, and AverMedia DVB-T 771. I would recommend these, as they are much better at receiving weak signals.

1) Newer cards will often not be supported by the kernel's drivers, so it will be a frustrating experience of waiting for patches to be developed, building custom kernels or overriding its DVB modules.

2) If a card works for SD, it will also work for HD. The problem is that the rest of the computer may not be up to it. I still haven't got HDTV playback working reliably yet (e.g. Channel 9 will crash the frontend, channel 2, 7, 10 or 28 stutter a lot). You need a very fast computer for HDTV. A 2GHz P4 or AMD will not suffice.

I have the same card as Nigel, the VisionPlus and find that it is not the easiest card to setup. I can get HD to work if I turn on XvMC, the downside to this is that the OSD colour turns awful.

I would go with what Nigel recommends as he is an authority for Aussie Land.

If you live in or around Brisbane I will be happy to help out in person, drop me an email.

Thanks anyway, but I live in Sydney CBD. Im looking towards HD more than SD but if HD becomes too messy, the system should be able to handle it without any problems. I'll let either of you know if I have any Australian spesific problems. Thanks for your help!

May be a little late but I am running two Dvico DVB-T lite cards and they run like a dream. I have only one HD channel selected and that is a little jerky but maybe some tinkering will help.
I am in a marginal area and the Dvico cards work whereas the Avermedia 771 struggled so I don't use that anymore. (loan it to friends to encouarge them to change over to Digital)
