Post subject:  1080i over DVI

I'm about to buy an HDTV with the assumption that I will be sending it a 1080i signal over DVI. Is anyone having any problems with this, or should it work fine as soon as I figure out the right modeline?

The TV I'm looking at has a "PC" VGA input, but it won't take 1920x1080 over it. I don't care, because it has an HDMI input that'll take a 1080i signal (The TV has 1920x1080 pixels), so I assume I can just get a DVI -> HDMI converter and be done with it.

I just want to know if anyone foresees any problems in my theory in case I am missing something. Also, for the 720P signals (Fox and ABC), Myth is obviously going to have to interlace them and convert them to 1080i. Are there any problems with this? i.e. does it require a huge amount of CPU power or does it make the image look like garbage?

Has anyone else had good luck doing this? I just don't want to buy the TV and realize that the Myth isn't going to work well with it.

My system is in my sig.

If you look around here and on gossamer threads, you will find numerous posts from people who have had difficulty getting 1080i to work over DVI. I can't tell you first hand, since my HD set has VGA input and I use that for 1080i input.

I suggest you use Google advanced search here and on Gossamer threads to find relevant posts. (See my sig.)

Hmmm....the Dragon claims that it supports 1080i over VGA and DVI, so I didn't think it was a big deal.

The main problem I had was a correct modeline. After that, I didn't have any display problems. Just adjust the GUI in the settings menu instead of overscan in the X conf file. My RCA 52" with DVI would never take to any overscan. Besides the GUI fixes it fine for mythtv on it.

Now if I could only leave the rest of it alone and quit breaking it.

Some HDTVs, like my Samsung 5067, will accept both 720p and 1080i over the VGA port, but will not accept 1080i over the DVI/HDMI input port.
