I don't remember all the details (it's been a very long time since my system has had any display other than the TV) but what I do remember is that with TwinView it was possible to get the video playback on the TV but that the "Xv controls" didn't work at all. That may not matter as much given nvidia-settings with the newer drivers but I haven't tried it so it's just speculation.
