Hi all:

Last night, 10 minutes before the ending of Battlestar Galactica, my
/cache partition ran out of space. Being a Linux newbie, I didn't know what
to do, though I had heard of the problem. So I searched the forum, and
saw all kinds of talk about running out of space on /cache , but couldn't
see anything about what to DO about it. Adding another HD isn't an option
right now. So I just tried removing the ringbuf1.nuv file. That didn't go
over well, as now I can't watch anything-Myth just returns to the main
menu. I then tried "touch ringbuf1.nuv" to create a new file, but that didn't
work either. Can someone tell me what is the best way to fix this?

Also, it might be a nice idea to add some kind of indicator somewhere in
KnoppMyth to let you know that you're running out of /cache space,
especially for the Wife Acceptance Factor (WAF). PErhaps some kind of
virtual LED or something? IIRC, I think it might list the disk space left in
the status box in KnoppMyth menu, but I don't know how much I need left
before it becomes critical, so it's kind of meaningless until I know that.

One should never run out of space on /cache. Whenever you change the channel or stop watching live TV, the ringbuffer file is deleted. The actual directory is /cache/cache. You need to check that for files that may not have been cleaned out due to a crash or power lose. If you check the system status (Information sub-menu), you can see how much space is left on the various partitions. Sorry, I'm not reinventing a perfectly good wheel.

also your ringbuffer should never grow past the max size you have set, which is why there are posts on the forum make sure it's smaller than the partition size, max ringbuffer size is smaller than the partition size it starts dropping the oldest material when it hits its max size. If the partition is smaller than the max ringbuffer size then you get problems, because you run out of disk space.

Thanks, but since I've deleted the ringbuf1.nuv file, I though it fairly
obvious that I found the /cache folder. Because of that, the partition is
basically 100% free.

What do I DO now, as opposed to watch out for in future?

And can someone please answer my other questions? What is the critical
threshold amount of disk space before Myth tanks? It seems from my
experience, and that of a few other guys that posted, R5A12 may decide
to ignore those settings anyways, so I'm more worried right now about
getting video/TV up and running than avoiding the problem next time.
(Though I will heed the warnings.)

well if you deleted the file and it's not working your problem has nothing to do with cache filing up, because that is the solution to cache filling up. you're going to have to check the logs, or run mythfrontend from an xterm to find out what the root cause of your problem is. could be that / filled up, sometimes that happens if log files grow out of control.

Thanks. The / partition is actually about 92% full. Is that enough to cause this problem?
At least I could sort of get video before I delete the ringbuf1.nuv file. Now I can't get any.

What else should I check?

well you shouldn't be 92% full on / but it shouldn't stop working till 100%. First thing I would do is run mythfrontend from an xterm and when video failed exit out and see what kind of errors are waiting for you in the xterm.

- Do this:

- Run mythtv-setup exiting the frontend and hit Alt-S is about the easiest way.
- Just say NO to both questions about clearing settings.
- Select "General" and hit enter twice to get to the 2nd screen.
- On the 2nd screen under General, set the cache size to be 1 less than the number you got above. For example, if yours say 6 instead of 16 you would set it to 5.
- Hit enter until you get back to the menu.
- Hit Esc to exit.
- Hit Alt-M to restart the frontend.
