Is it possible/feasible to set up a KnoppMyth installation on something without a tuner card? Since nearly all users want PVR time shifting/TV recording, the documentation doesn't say whether this is possible. If so how one would go about disabling/removing the relevant menus on the front end?

All I really want to do is have it play back some anime and or music through my stereo and TV using a remote without having to change the cd/dvd all the time.

The victim is a Celeron 500mHz/128mb ram/6GB HDD with integrated NIC and only 2 free PCI slots (no AGP). The idea is to install a usb2/firewire card and something like the PCI Geforce4 mx4000 for TV-out (integrated card has monitor out only). The usb/firewire card would hopefully be usable to allow play back of content on a connected external drive / iPod.

I'm a computer engineering student with free time and would have no problem soldering up an LIRC serial interface. However I lack experience with KnoppMyth/MythTV and (to a lesser extent) Linux in general, although I have lots of help on the latter. I would welcome any advice people have on how to go about setting this up without lots of frustration and without blowing up my roommate’s TV

In earlier releases of MythTV, it wasn't possible. However now it is. One simply needs to edit the menu XML files. Search the forum for mainmenu.xml for further details.

One other thing, you'd probably want to do a custom install. An automatic install of KM creates a partition for the live tv buffer. In your case that probably wouldn't make for the most effective use of space, especially with that tiny hard drive.
