Hi all,

I've had this system mostly working with MythTV on a much older version of Knoppmyth first, and later on Fedora Core 3, but I hadn't finished it or used it in a few months. I just tried a fresh auto-install of R5A22, which went great until I ran into a crash when running mythtv-setup.

Here's my hardware:
DFI K8M800-MLVF (socket 754 w/ AMD64 3000+ newcastle)
512mb PC-3200
Geforce FX-5200 128MB AGP8x via RGB at 1600x1200
PCHDTV 3000
Lite-On 167T DVD-ROM
Creative Labs basic PCI Soundblaster (I put it in when the latest FC3 Alsa driver killed the onboard 8237 sound, and as a side effect found that my peak CPU on 1080i .ts playback in mplayer went from ~70% to ~65%, but that's not related to my current problem...)

Here's the problem

In Mythtv setup, I selected the DVB driver PCHDTV 3000 /dev/video32 entered my zap2it account info for a local DTV-only channel lineup, and configured it as a video source.

I tried this next part a few times, but it always ended the same way:

When I tried to set up the channels, it crashed, and I eventually saw an error in the shell about permissions on /dev/video32.

However, /dev/video32 seems to be open enough:
crw-rw----

I made it other read/writeable just for fun, but still no dice.

I'll double-check the user:group when I get home tonight, but I think it was root:video

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-GregorM

How is it one selected the DVB driver yet you are using /dev/video32? I don't think this is possible.

I tried it again this morning:

After rebooting, I re-ran mythtv-setup, clearing the card and channel settings.
Then I selected the DBV drivers, loaded my zap2it profile, and the video source configuration worked fine this time?!?

Afterwards, I was able to scan for channels and got several with just a bowtie I was using for testing! The channels it found had roughly 65-85% signal during the scan, although it only found about 1/3 of the digital OTA channels I get on my Samsung SIR-T165 HD tuner box. However, I have a slightly better antenna on that box, the Zenith mini directional HD antenna.

I did have a further problem whereby although it got my zap2it lineup in mythtv-setup OK, mythfilldatabase gets an HTTP 500 error when trying to retrieve the guide info. (this was a couple of hours ago) I'll try again later.

I'm still mystified as to why the /dev/video32 (and all of the other /dev/videoN devices) showed up at all.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, as seems to have been happening to lots of other folks, liveTV just gives a blank screen, and I have to kill mythfrontend from another shell to get out. (to be fair I only gave it about 10 minutes after pressing Esc and several other keys before giving up and killing it)

If I still can't get guide data working, I'll try a direct manual recording later.

Thanks,
-GregorM

Hi,
I have found with DT stuff, that it needs a strong signal, 100% + is good. There is a code list of what the letters mean on the docs at http://mythtv.org . May want to look at that for reference. If you can, pick a channel that has a second stream (usually weather) to start with as a default channel. The full HD is a lot more fussy. 1080i is real touchy.

In all fairness, I am only running an AMD Detected 1512.180 MHz processor (dmesg) so I don't expect perfection, however I usually watch Leno in HD on the computer monitor. I just can't do de-interlace.

video is FX5200
