Hi All,

I did an upgrade from R5A16 to R5A30.1 and it went quite well (PVR-350 TV-OUT Install Script: R4V5 - R5A30.1 (NTSC only) was very helpful). Note: I did not do a backup prior to upgrading. I have limited space, none available for a backup. Wasn't sure what this backs up (mysql? videodata?).

The problem I am having now is that the database does not liste the TV shows we recorded prior to the upgrade.

In the General screen of the Mythtv-Setup utility, I changed the directory to /myth/tv/

After rebooting the system, I get a cannot connect to the server. Is it running? Check the IP address' message.

The server is running because all of the music is listed (I added that by updating the directory in SetupUtilities/Music Settings).

I also tried a KnoppMyth restore and that has not worked.

Any suggestion on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

Dr. Hood

Update:

I found this post (unable to connect to backend.. is it running?) that I thought the solution was near....

There was some great suggestions at trying to determine what the hangup is....

When I enter the command as root
Quote:
tail -f /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

I get the following output
Quote:
2006-01-27 06:02:15.365 New DB connection, total: 2
2006-01-27 06:02:15.575 New DB connection, total: 3
2006-01-27 06:02:16.084 New DB schedular connection
2006-01-27 06:02:16.102 mythbackend version: 0.18.1.20050523-1 www.mythtv.org
2006-01-27 06:02:16.107 Enable verbose msgs : important general

WAIT......I discovered I had the wrong directory in the Mythtv-Setup --> General screen.

I changed it to the correct /myth/tv directory.

However, the problem persists.........

I could start completely over and re-do the upgrade, but this won't solve my problem either because it won't default to the directory where our previous recordings are located.....

Very frustrated at the moment. I just don't understand why changing the directory setting in the Mythtv-Setup --> General can result in such a huge mess (no TV!!!!). It was working before it was changed, now it does not (:-((((

Hopefully someone can give some guidance on how to get this box functioning again.

If you didn't do a backup then you have lost the entire database :( There is a script on the forums to rebuild the recordings from your /myth/tv directory i suggest you use that.

The knoppmyth backup basically backs up the database + some config files so you can restore them after an upgrade etc.

The database backup takes up the space of a 2-3min recording in mpeg-2 (depending on the sice of your database maybe a 4min recording). It is placed in /myth/backup. Everything under /myth is left intact durring the upgrade. That is why your shows are still in the /myth/tv directory.

Hate to tell you but I think you have lost all your old recordings. There is a old script that is suppost to add database entries for unlisted .nuv files but I think it has been broken for quite some time.

Thank you mad_paddler and

Tis okay if we lost the recordings, it would have been nice to get them back in the database, but they were only live TV stuff that will just be replaced shortly.

Unfortunately, to a novice like me, it isn't obvious that the backup utility part of KnoppMyth backs up only the Mysql database and some config files, rather than the data. I am used to backing up the data (in this case the actual recordings) and didn't consider that it was recording database data but not the mpeg recordings.

Maybe this can be made more obvious by MythTV developers? I suspect this isn't the best forum to make this suggestion though (hehe).

The good news, is that I believe I have solved this problem. I will write a more detailed explanation shortly.

The MythTV developers have nothing to do with KnoppMyth. Did you even bother to read the cods? It clearly states one must backup first before using auto update.
