Post subject: | R5C7 Auto Upgrade - Help I'm lost |
Okay everything seems to be going fine and I'm on to the post installation procedures: I enter the root password I configure time and date I cancel the ip address selection (my onboard is disabled and I have yet to install ndiswrapper) I select i686 Mythtv-setup does not run (as per the pamphlet) and my database is restored At this point I see a message like "all done, restarting GDM" and I'm left at the x desktop now the pamphlet says Quote: To configure MythTV, you must complete at least steps 1 thru 4. For now, I'll just refer you to the MythTV docs: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-9.html. Steps 1-4 from where? the MythTV howto section 9.1 - 9.4? Quote: Once setup is complete, the installation script will run mythfilldatabase. Once this is complete, mythfrontend will start. If you have an nVidia based video card, now is the point at which we recommend installing the drivers.
And I thought since I saw an nvidia splash screen the nvidia drivers were already installed. If somebody could give me a shove in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Thanx! |

I've no idea which pamphlet you are reading... Those are not the instructions for doing an auto upgrade. What problem are you having exactly? ndiswrapper is already installed... |

The Pamphlet of KnoppMyth located here http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html I get confused at the post installation steps. And I mis-spoke (mis-wrote?) I know ndiswrapper is installed, I meant my wireless nic driver that ndiswrapper needs. Thanks |

Well, after the system is restored and it restarts GDM (it sems all is well to this point), I'm left at X desktop. The frontend won't start and if I try to start it manually it halts with a "segmentation fault. I'm not sure where to go now. |

What version did you upgrade from/to? What else has changed prior/during the upgrade? Any new hardware? |

It includes a lot of tricks to make your upgrade experience smoother. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10116 |

Quote: I believe that this actually refers to mythtv-setup. You are correct Sir! (In my best Ed McMahon voice) Oh, and Cecil, thanks for moving vice deleting my post! I lost track of it when you moved it, glad I looked for it before sticking my foot in my mouth ![]() I was confused by this because of the previous paragraph stating Quote: If you performed an Auto Upgrade, mythtv-setup will not be ran. The database will be restored and configuration files along with /home will be restored. Once this is complete, you don't have to reboot. mythtv-setup will now run to update the database schema (if the version installed is greater than the version that was updated), you can just exit mythtv-setup.
I took that to mean mythtv-setup did not have to run, or ran on it's own. However once I figured out how to launch mythtv-setup (for some reason it wouldn't launch from ctrl-alt-F1, I had to use xshell), ran steps 1-4 of mythtv-setup, configured my wireless nic using ndiswrapper, and ran mythfilldatabase, it's back up and running. I did look at the upgrade hints posting, briefly.... very briefly... as being a n00b (my first foray into linux was the initial build of this box using R5A26) and not messing with linux since I got the box running 6 months ago, just looking at the code was confusing so I jumped in and went for it. I did however backup my XF86Config-4 file and did use the TV testcd option at boot. Now however I notice there is a small issue with my PVR500, AND I am upgrading from R5A26, so I'll backtrack a bit and see if I can't figure that out. Thanks everyone, for a great product and your patience (I know it is tried severely and often!) Time to update my sig with R5C7! |

![]() For future reference and other newbies, when you see lots of detail, it means that someone bothered to write down all the steps rather than assuming you knew how to do them. Rather than being frightened you should be encouraged. These are intended to be complete enough that you can simply cut and paste the commands directly from the browser window into the shell window. A complete no brainer. |

![]() Seriously, I know you put a lot of effort into that, all of you guys do, and I (and I'm sure lots of other folks) do appreciate it. Thanks again! |
