I'd like to archive the HDTV mpeg files that Mythtv records directly to dvd-r discs. For large HDTV files that are bigger than a dvd-r disc, the process needs to spread the file across several discs - or span discs to use a different phrase. I'm currently using Roxio in Windows to do this file archiving. I pull the file across the SAMBA network connection and write it to dvds. Roxio will span a big file (15GB for example) across several dvd-r discs. If I could do this from inside the Mythtv machine, it would save a step or 2 and save time. Will mytharchive do this? If not, will some other Linux application do this? Hopefully, Eric |

I don't know MythArchive will do this on a data DVD. I have successfully tested transcoding an HD recording onto a video DVD w/ success using R5E50. The results look great! |

The HDTV to DVD transfomation sounds promising! Which program did you use to do that? MythArchive or MythBrun? In R5D1, I've been using Mythburn to make dvds of the new Remastered Star Trek shows that are being broadcast over the air at present. Mythburn must be converting the mpeg transport stream file to a program stream file and also transcoding the mpeg file to a dvd-compliant bitrate - and it is really fast at this - faster than any other dvd authoring program I've used. I plan to upgrade from R5D1 to R5E50 soon. I've been reading all the tjc upgrade notes to make sure I am fully ready to budget enough time for it. I don't want to start it at 7pm some night and then realize at bedtime that I need 3 more hours to tweak and recover. Eric |

If your DVD recorder can do dual layer, there are DVD+R discs that give you approximately 9GB per disc. As I understand it MythArchive can write to dual layer discs. Of course, it's best to try this out with some test recordings to see if your DVD player can read the dual layer discs before trying anything else with the more important files. Bruce S. |

I do have a Pioneer Dual Layer dvd writer, but 9GB is not good enough. I just recorded a 3 hour HDTV program and the file is 23GB! I've also got several 15GB HDTV mpg files. I really need a disc spanning solution to replace what I'm doing in Windows. Eric |
