Post subject: | Channel Guide Question |
Hi I have Directtv but I have no way of controlling it with my mythtv box, how can I set my MYTHTV BOX so that it won't ever move from channel 3, which is the channel that I use to view my DIRECTV and still use the Channel Guide whitout Mythtv trying to change the actual channel.... Let me give you an example for those that do not understand.... If I set my MYTHTV to record using the channel guide, and I set it to record from some program that I see on the Channel Guide and it hapens to be channel 202 for example, when the time comes to record the program mythtv will change the tuner to channel 202 and it will record absolutely nothing since DirectTV comes in through channel 3. I want the tuner to remain in Channel 3 and still use the Channel Guide and still have it reccord at the specified time. |

Search for "irblaster" and mythv-setup. Basically you need to setup an "external tuner control script" and configure MythTV to use that. When you do that you also tell it what channel to expect the signal on. |

TJC thank for your help but I DO NOT WANT TO CONTROL MY DIRECTTV USING MYTHTV, This is what I need: 1) I need MythTV to stay at channel 3 AT ALL TIMES 2) I want to use the program guide without MYTHTV CHANGING THE CHANNEL ON ME. I want to be able to select something on the program guide and have it record at that particular time without mythTV changing the channel on me. because IF IF MYTH TV CHANGES THE CHANNEL THEN IT WILL NOT RECCORD I can just leave my directtv on the desired channel and MYTHTV will record at that time without changing the MYTHTV tuner. I do not have the cable to control my DIRECTTV receiver, I might want to get it in the future, for now I would like to be able to record usong the program guide, at whatever time without changing from channel 3 |

I assume you are using an analog capture card, are you using the tuner input to the card or the Composite/S Video one? Bruce S. |

I am using a Pinnacle PCTV with a phillips bt878 chip, it is connected to my DirectTV receiver via a coaxial cable. I am not using Composite. I tune my card to channel 3 and that is where all the channels from the DirectTV receiver come through. |

Right, I don't know if this will work, but it's worth a try. If you have a single Channel setup that works to record from Channel 3, stop the backend and start up mythtv-setup. In the Channel Editor, go to that channel setup, and on the second screen (where all the sliders are for contrast etc.) note down the value for frequency, then exit. Then for the rest of the channels go into their second screens, note down their value and replace the frequency value with the one you noted down that worked with Channel 3. Then exit You may want to try it out with a single channel first (restarting the backend of course) to see if it worked. I just want to comment, you would get a better quality capture using Composite or S-Video. Bruce S. |

If you'd done what I'd suggested you'd have found the information you needed. Like how to put in a dummy external tuner script (/bin/true) that doesn't actually do anything for testing, and how to get the tuner on your capture card to stay on the same channel. Almost every thread that discusses this stuff mentions the word "irblaster" so it happens to be a good search key... |

Thanks for the tip about S-Video I connected it and it does look better, the thing its that S-Video does not transmit audio, only video and my RCA Audio output on the DirectTV receiver is allready being used, I guess I'll purchase a splitter cable, about the frequency tip that you gave me I went there and I have nothing for frequency it is just blanc... I am singning out for tonight, I have to go out and give my mind a rest, talk to you tomorrow (if you are here), and... Tanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it. |

Now you are using S-Video, I think tjc's script suggestion would be better (and easier! ![]() Bruce S. |

Hi Bruce and TJC: Since I connected the Mythtv box using s-video instead of coaxial I do not have that problem anymore, when I change channels on the tunner it does not actually change I can put channel 3 and 202 and 360 and whatever channel and I will still see the same until I change the channel on DirecTV that is EXACTLY what I wanted, S-Video was the magical solution. Now i'm having a small problem, I had the setting on the alsamixer so that it would amplify the sound from my tunner card (because it was really faint) and it did but with no bass and you could hear the sound of the hard drive. No I don't have to amplify anything sice I can connect a cable straight from my DirectTV receiver to the Audio-IN connection of my computer, I allready did this but the sound sounds horrible because of my previous settings, and I discoveres that one of the channels does not work it is only noise, so all I get it mono, not stereo. Do you guys happen to know what are the normal sound settings? this is what I had before... Quote: Do this at the shell screen:
$ amixer set Master,0 100%,100% unmute $ amixer set PCM,0 100%,100% unmute $ amixer set Line,0 75%,75% mute captur $ amixer set Capture,0 100%,100% captur $ su # alsactl store # exit By the way.... I could not thank you enough, you have been of great help, I am really happy with my MythTV box now. |
