Post subject:  newbie could not start the mythbackend

Hi!

I am totally new with Linux and mythtv, but I love the functionality of mythtv! So, I go for it and bought hardware and I am installing it now using knoppmyth. Unfortunuatilly, I have a few problems with the system.

I start with the most important issue: My backend will not start and I think it has to do with my PVR-500 card. I did use the search button of the forum, but could not find something to fix this :(

I hope you can help me. Here is some log information:

Thanks in advance!

Pay extra attention to the part about "Input Connections".

Thanks, so I made a configuration mistake during the installation. Can I change this or do I have to reinstall the system?

Wow. Where do I begin...

OK, let's break this down... These are all from the BlackScreenWatchingTV page I pointed you to above.
Quote:
Please see the GettingBackIntoMytTVsetup page and then check the rest of these sub-points there.

The page this points to tells you two or three ways to get back into the setup program so you can fix your configuration. One of which Cecil kindly posted for you. It really shouldn't be necessary to repeatedly tell folks "Rather than repeat everything a dozen times we use links to the detailed instructions for certain tasks, so be sure to follow the links!"
Quote:
Under "1. General" (3rd page) make sure you have the right frequency set selected.

The quoted text is what you will see for the first menu item in the mythtv-setup GUI, When you select that by using the up and down arrow keys, and hitting the enter key, you'll get the first setup page. Selecting the [next] button on that will take you to the second setup page, selecting the [next] button on that will take you to the third setup page. After you make any corrections on that page, as described in the wiki, continue selecting [next] until you get to a [finish] button and select that. All the other entry pages work in the same way.
Quote:
Under "2. Capture Cards", make sure you have your capture card defined correctly.

After selecting [finish] above you will be returned to the main menu. Select the second item described by the quoted text. You will see a list with an option to setup a new card definition, a couple of options to delete card definitions, and possibly one or more cards which have already been defined which allow you to edit the definitions. You can either edit the exisiting card definition (by selecting it from the list and hitting enter) or delete all your definitions (by selecting the appropriate menu entry and hitting enter) and create or recreated them (by selecting the entry for a new card and hitting enter). Editing an existing card or creating a new one will take you to an entry page where you can chose the appropriate options as described on the wiki page. When you're done adding or editing capture card definitions hitting the escape key will take you back to the main menu.

I'm going to skip the detailed description of the Video Source setups since it works more or less the same way as the Capture Card setup. You should go through it following the notes on the wiki and make sure that you have your channel lineup downloaded.

Quote:
Under "4. Input Connections" make sure that you have associated the right "Video Source" with the right input and only that input.

This is the most common place for people to make a mistake. Either by failing to define any input connections or by defining connections that do not exist. When you select Input Connections you will get a list of all the possible inputs for all of your TV capture cards. You should leave most of them alone, but you MUST associate the one(s) you have connected to your antenna, cable, cable box, or other input with a Sideo Source. See the wiki page for guidance on this. You select the input to make the association with like you do the Capture Card or Video Source to edit above. This will take you to an entry screen where you can select a Video Source (which you must have previously defined!) and vartious other settings as described on the wiki. Make your changes then select [finish]
