Post subject: | No DataDirect listing, Error is "bad file descriptor&qu |
All, i've been reading the forums all day and trying the advice here, on the wiki and other places. KnoppMyth installs fine, MythTV starts, and I can even watch TV on the monitor. However, I cannot retrieve DataDirect listings, not even the first time when a lineup is supposed to be retrieved. When i watch the terminal while the process is going on, each try fails with the error "Failed writing HTTP request: Bad file descriptor." I do, however, get the 401 error message, but not the 200 success message. Once in a while, the process gets farther, but does not download data. Here's an attempt at providing the info you might need to help me: -- clean install of R5E50, several times during the last two months. WGet is 1.10, Myth is .20 and so on. -- computer has MSI MS-6368 mobo with Celeron 900, 150GB HDD. i have run a variety of Linux distributions on it, without any difficulty detecting hardware. -- Hauppage WinTV PVR-350 card with TV out, remote is grey/silver on top and black on bottom -- over the air TV reception only. i get about 20 channels, include DT, so there's a few choices even where i live. No cable or DSL, though, so my internet connection is DirecPC via the Hughes satellite system. -- i have repeatedly deleted video card and source, stopping backend, and recreating. I even truncated the capturecards direct in MySQL. i was careful not to scan for channels. -- my NetGear FR114P router is set to MTU=576. However, connecting the Myth box directly to the satellite Internet modem does not solve the problem, so i do not think it is a router problem. -- i do have a labs.zap2it.com login, and i do believe i have correctly entered it into the configuration screen. i have recreated my OTA lineup, too. This lineup does not show up in the MythTV source configuration screen. Oh, and by the way, i can't find a browser in the FluxBox window manager. Where do i go for that, thanks? And, thank you very much for the help i hope i receive! Best regards, Jim |

Bruce, thank you for your reply. Actually, i'm having a bit of trouble with that. i can ping some sites, such as earthlink.net (my ISP via the DirecPC system), but not others. i have the same problem on all boxes connected to the internet, not just the myth box. -- the IP address for every site i try to ping does indeed resolve from the url to the ip address on both the knoppmyth box and my windows xp box -- disabling my hardware and software firewalls does not solve the problem, on either the knoppmyth box or my windows xp box. -- i am able to browse the web fine from the windows box. as i said in the first post, i can't find a browser on the knoppmyth box -- the ping times for earthlink.net are large, like > 1000 ms, but that is the nature of a satellite internet connection. i'll take the knoppmyth box to work tomorrow to see what happens on that network. i'd be grateful for any ideas you might have, thanks. best regards, jim |

There is setting for networking that gives some problems with some firewalls/other networking gear, unfortunately I can't recall the name of it, or how to switch it off. Bruce S. |

Post subject: | problem seems to be with home network. |
Bruce, i took the knoppmyth box to work this morning and ran the mythfilldatabase and retrieved lineups with zero problems. that leads me to believe the problem lies with my home satellite internet connection, not with knoppmyth or mythtv. i'll pursue the issue with my ISP -- maybe there is a satellite modem configuration change i should enact. Thank you for your help, and if you do remember the networking change you mentioned, i'd appreciate you sending it along. |

Apparently there is a problem sometimes with TCP Windowing or Scaling. The last post in this thread from jrollo shows how to switch it off. I believe you need to add it to one of the startup scripts to ensure that it is active after a reboot. Bruce S. |

bruce, thanks, i'll give that a try. i'm also working my way thru the tech help desk tiers at Hughes and EarthLink to see why i can't ping. they seem baffled, so maybe i have a failing satellite modem. complicated things, they are! |

Did you ever get anywhere with Hughes? I just moved my box to them and suddenly I am getting the same errors; worked fine on cable before. |

Post subject: | still no joy thru satellite |
Sorry, i am still having a problem. i upgraded my satellite modem and service speed, but am still getting an error. It's the same error, or one that says no data received. i think i need to take it up with the zap labs. |

If I try to log into the listings link manually, I get a HTTP 405 error, which according to this page is a problem with the ISP http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E405.html I contacted Hughes about this twice, and both times they said they got the error too, but it is not their problem, and talk to zap2it to fix it. |
