Ok, great. After a bit of time with no block of free time to work on this, I power up and get the now familiar grey screen however now I have a network issue because Putty doesn't work.

I'm guessing I'm down to re-installing or ...

When I could still login, I did a backup to DVD using the following commands:

mondoarchive -OVi -d /myth/backup/mondo -gF -s 4200m -E "/myth/tv /myth/backup /myth/tmp /myth/video /myth/democracy"
and
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvdrw=/myth/backup/mondo/1.iso

I don't want to blow away recordings if I don't have to so is it worth my time trying to restore from the mondoarchive? If so, how to best accomplish that?

I posted these before but they still apply.
ttp://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=DisasterRecovery
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=RepairingMythConvergDB

- Boot the machine in single user mode or using the CD as a rescue disk. This will give you an admin console to work from.

- Running out of disk space would explain most of these symptoms and how to troubleshoot and clean up after that is well documented.

- The scarier scenario is that your HD is failing. In that case your best bet is to produce a backup using the standard script somehow while you can, install a new drive, copy the content of the old /myth across to an appropriate partition, swap cables and auto-upgrade.

BTW - We tell folks to "make a good backup and auto-upgrade" a lot because it's how the developers and more experienced tester generally recover from serious SNAFUs. It's our silver bullet for many problems. We know it works because we depend on it and use it ourselves.

tjc,

Thanks for the assistance again. I went ahead and booted to single user mode. I moved /usr/bin/startx to /usr/bin/startx.save and rebooted. I was able to do a mythbackup and then auto-upgrade. But upon reboot after the auto-upgrade, just get a grey screen and I cannot connect remotely.

This is between phase 1 and phase 2 right? Sounds like your X configuration is just horked. See the http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenAfterInstall troubleshooting page.

You're going to end up booting to single user mode again, checking the X log file, possibly tweaking the X config file, or installing a different version of the driver, and rebooting.

Checking the log file is key. It will tell you what if anything the server is unhappy about. Lines that start with (EE) or (WW) that aren't just whining about missing fonts are your smoking guns.

There's actually something about this in the R5F27 Hints...

In Xorg.0.log:

Code:
...
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
...
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 3, 0x8000, 0x000006dc, 0x00000d54)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
(EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***
...

I'm going to have to continue tomorrow.

Again, thanks for the assistance.

Figured I'd post a follow up to this. As you can see, I don't get a lot of time to work on this. I eventually tried a fresh install...a few times. Whenever I rebooted and was about to start "graphics mode" for setup and such I would just hang at the grey screen.

Today, I picked up a new video card. Was using a 5200 but all I could find today was a 6200. Replaced it, fresh install again, no problems!
