It's not a skin, it's a mythfrontend replacement.

Does it offer something different than a new skin would? I should probably read more, and I will, but I am lazily asking here :)

That's the link to his blog, where you can get a lot more info and some screencasts of Gloss in action.

It's worth a look, very promising piece of software if you ask me!

yeah... this definitely has me excited, too. especially the talk of a MythMusic replacement that is more like FrontRow, can be integrated with my Amarok database, and sports a pretty animated coverflow-like menu system.

for those too lazy to read the links and watch the screencast, gloss is an animated mythfrontend replacement that uses OpenGL effects. it has animated menus and some slideshow functionality. it's still skinable and hopefully runs off xml menus like mythfrontend (that's not clear from the website). it's in early development and doesn't have full functionality yet, but is well on it's way.

this looks like a great project. i wish i knew python so i could help out.

This is the next generation frontend. Mythmusic is the one plugin that could use a serious re-write. I wish I had the time to do it myself.

From the article, it doesn't support playback or scheduling of recordings yet so it's a no go for a PVR at this time. Hopefully that will be the next feature after the music player.

Mythfrontend doesn't look bad but there is no doubt it can look a whole lot better. Especially on the hardware many of us are running.

This is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Hi,

I made a post in the R6 Feature Request thread (http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=17183) and it illicited a bunch of criticism about the interface, and a post from the author of Gloss.

It is very much a work in progress, but it sure looks good, and even in it's current form I would like to have it as an alternative in Knoppmyth to the very ordinary interface offered.

One of the things that is mentioned in his blog is that there is a project under way to change the skin/theme system in Mythfrontend that would allow for themes like Gloss to be more common.

I think that this is where Open Source can really shine: more innovative solutions to problems. The problem is that it is also where Open Source projects fall down: the reliance on an individual to take the initiative to move the new themeing engine forward in the MythTV communty.

I wish my C programming skills were stronger, because this is a place that MythTV really has a deficincy when compared to commecial products like Windows Media Centre and AppleTV.

Cheers
Victor

Gloss has gone final (0.1) on July 4th.

Check out the youtube video. It looks pretty nice.
