Post subject:  running without mythbackend and mysql

I have a friend who is using R5.5 exclusively to watch video content with mplayer via mythvideo since the machine he's running on is only a P3-500. In this role only using mythvideo as a frontend to mplayer, he has no use for either myth-backend or mysql. How can I configure mythfrontend to launch without complaining that it can't locate a uPnP backend or that it can't connect to mysql? Is this even possible?

Hi,

You can't. The fe uses data from the mysql for themes& etc. They don't use much for resources so leave the mysql run.

I figured as much, but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks for the confirmation.

Hi,

No problem however I would suggest trying it as full system. You may be pleasantly surprised with you can do with a 500 mhz machine :) Stopping the backend will gain very little in performance.

As Mike says the BE overhead is very small. Watching live TV (one of the more strenuous tasks for the BE) mine is running at 5% of RAM and 1% CPU, otherwise it uses ~0% CPU and maybe 4% of RAM. The mysql DB server overhead is about the same.
