I built a Dish Network UHF remote interface and wanted to share with the group. I have seen alot of questions in various forums across the netregarding this subject. I have been using this for several months now without any problems. Just built a second one for a friend and decided to document it.

Dish UHF Remote to MythTV Interface Sept, 2008

Description:

Interface and software to allow MythTV to change channels on Dish Network model 322 Satellite Receiver 2nd Tuner which uses a UHF PRO remote control (can also be done on other models with UHF on 2nd tuner - model 625).

This requires opening and soldering wires to the PC board in the remote. Recommend obtaining a second remote that can be modified. Make sure spare remote can operate Satellite Receiver – may need to set ID number – which will be difficult to do after modification.

Software and interface are designed to use the Parallel Port (Printer Port).

See diagrams and schematics at end of this document for details and additional clarification.

UHF Pro Remote modifications:

Set remote to correct ID number and verify it can control tuner 2 on satellite receiver. Open case on remote - being careful not to damage the circuit board inside. Locate round pads on circuit board that are connected to the rows and columns for the keypad – only need to locate numbers 1 thru 0 an Select keys. Scrape the pads to expose the copper. Tac solder wires to these locations and the negative battery terminal. Good soldering skills will be required to keep from damaging the copper traces on circuit board. Glue wires into place to prevent movement of wires from lifting copper pads on circuit board.

Interface board: Construction of the interface board that interfaces between the remote and the parallel port consists of:

11 – Transistors (2N2222)

11 – Resistors (30K or 47K)

25 pin connector

1 - printed circuit project board (Radio Shack - 276-150)

Wire.

A fair amount of soldering will be required.

Software:

Program is designed to accept the channel selection sent from MythTV as command line parameter and output to printer port.

Compile with these options: gcc -O dish-uhf-ch.c -o dish-uhf-ch I found that gcc 3.4 worked well to compile but 4.1 did not. Allow to run as root: chmod u+s dish-uhf-ch Give all users read, write and execute permissions: chmod 777 dish-uhf-ch

I had a similar problem with a old 4000 sat receiver. I looked on line and
found that there is an undocumented command to make it use IR instead
of UHF and then it would work with my IR LIRC IRBLASTER stuff.

The catch was that there were some IR components missing from the
STB that had to be ordered.

The result was that it works though...

FWIW

I am trying to do this but with SageTV, has anyone expressed interest from Sage?
I have a dumb question, before I take a saw to my remote is there an easy way to open it? I don't see any screws and it does not seem to lend itself to being pried open.
