Post subject:  Random Crashes on Complete Noob

I apologize for having to ask for help with while providing so little information. But, I'm not sure where else to turn.

About 2 years ago, we built a KnoppMyth system and, with a friend's help, have updated it a couple of times. It ran very well for a long time. Occasionally, the entire system seemed to lock up. The front end would be frozen and the machine would not respond to ssh or ping requests. We would hit the reset button and the machine would run again for weeks or months without problem.

These lockups have become more frequent, sometimes happening twice/day. I don't where to lock to begin to figure out the problem. Can anyone help?

My noob status goes even further, though. I don't even know how to tell what release I have installed. Here is the core hardware:

Intel BOXDG965WHMKR LGA 775 Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6420
1 GB RAM
GeForce 7600GS 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card

Thanks for your help!

First things first. What is the system doing when the locks occur? Have you taken a look at the wiki? Lots of great info on there.

Nothing. We go to use it and find it frozen.

It might be sitting on the "Watch Recordings" menu. It might be at one of the other, higher level menus. It locked up while I was watching something yesterday. I don't believe it was scheduled to record anything at that time.

Which TV tuner/s are you using? Which remote control?

Eventually you'll have to check a log or two to see if you can find something that looks suspicious at the approximate time your system froze:

Thanks much for the input. The link to the log file page was a BIG help!

The problem is probably disk space. We have put in about 1 TB for recordings and my kids have let their shows pile up. At this point we have about 12 GB free on the volume which holds our shows (separate from the volumes which hold the system and Myth code).

I had imagined that Myth deleted old stuff as it needed new space. But, the disk situation corresponds so closely with our crashes that should start there. So, the first thing we are going to do is some serious editing.

On the tuner something strange is happening:

Tuner: When we built the Knoppmyth box, we put in "Hauppauge Personal Video Recorder WinTV-PVR 500 MCE White box PCI Interface."

But, when I run dmesg | grep "tuner model is", I get:

tveeprom 1-0050: tuner model is Philips FQ1236A MK4 (idx 92, type 57)
tveeprom 1-0050: second tuner model is Philips TEA5768HL FM Radio (idx 101, type 62)
tveeprom 2-0050: tuner model is Philips FQ1236A MK4 (idx 92, type 57)
tveeprom 2-0050: second tuner model is Philips TEA5768HL FM Radio (idx 101, type 62)

My remote is a Streamzap.

I'll let you know how things go once we have cleaned out the old stuff.

Gary
