Can anyone recommend a mobo with onboard video (VDPAU possbile?) that works for HD output? I'm looking for something reasonably priced but that works flawlessly.

I get a lot of pc's from work with plenty of power but there's always an issue. My latest MBE candidate has intel onboard and only one pci-16 slot. There are two pci-e (small connector) slots but it seems almost impossible to find a reasonbly priced video card for it. And if it's not reasonably priced, why shove a square peg in a round hole? (i.e. buy the mboo)

Thanks.

I'm not certain what CPU and memory you plan to use but such boards do exist and I use two of them. You can get a board with an nvidia GPU built in.

For example two of my boards have Socket LGA775 boards which run Core2 Duos and have an on-board NVidia 9300 which works great including VDPAU. That board is a ASUS P5N7A-VM.

LGA775 will support Core 2 and Pentium-M as I recall.

I'm sure there are more modern options available as my systems are about 2 years old.

You are looking for board with Nvidia chipsets on them.
Intel Mother Boards would have GeForce 9200 and 9300
AMD Mother Boards would have Geforce 8200 and 8300

The GeForce 8300/9300 are about 10% faster than the 8200/9200 chipssets but seems to make no difference getting HD to screen

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU

I use AMD processors and these are the boards that I have used

Asus M4N78 Pro ---------- on board GeForce 8300 Video,DDR2 Memory, 3 PCI slots, HDMI and DVI output, S/PDIF Optical Note: Coaxial output is on board but needs an S/PDIF coaxial bracket.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131382

Asus M3N78 Pro ---------- on board GeForce 8300 Video, DDR2 Memory, 3 PCI slots, HDMI and DVI output, S/PDIF Coaxial,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131320

Biostar TF8200 A2 -------- on board Geforce 8200 Video, DDR2 Memory, 3 PCI slots, HDMI and DVI output, S/PDIF Optical Note: Coaxial output is on board but needs an S/PDIF coaxial bracket, Large heat pipe on chipset
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 813138113R

You need to keep in mind what you are doing here. You are moving the video processing from the cpu to the chipset and when you move the the processing you also move the heat produced. The Asus chipsets run hot and count on the airflow from the cpu fan to cool them. If you do not have air movement across the heat sink you will need to add a fan. This is true with all fanless video cards. The Biostar board is a little more forgiving with the heat pipe heat sink.

Your video memory is now using the mother boards RAM so you will need 1 gig or more to keep from swapping

I have 3 pci pcHDTV 3000 cards that I run and they work fine

You don not need over a 300 watt power supply infact 300 watts is a over kill. The best one I have used is Seasonic SS-300ET, Certified 80 PLUS Bronze

Any AMD A2 or A3 processor around 3500 single core or faster will do just fine. One of my machines is a AMD ADD3500 and if I remember right it uses less than 20% displaying 1080i when VDPAU enabled. 75% CPU when no VDPAU or no other acceleration is used.

All of this you will have to find on ebay.
Asus M4N78 Pro eBay $50.00 or less
Asus M3N78 Pro Ebay $30.00- 40.00
Biostar TF8200 Ebay $30.00 hard to find only about 1or 2 a year
prices may be lower by now.

Do any of these setups have enough horsepower to do HD without VDPAU enabled?

My Core 2 Duo (I think it is about 2.4GHz) can for H.264 that is generated by an HD-PVR and I have it set to the maximum bitrate. Whether it can do it generically will depend on the encoding and bit rate of your source. If you have a proper blueray rip running at a high bit rate and encoded in VC-1 then I doubt it.

I do find VDPAU does a better job though. The only reason I put Core 2's in the systems is for future proofing. If you have VDPAU then you can get away with an Atom class processor. And perhaps soon maybe even an ARM based processor given NVidia's love-in with ARM.

Sorry off to dream land where I envision an SoC with an ARM and a VDPAU capable NVidia GPU.

BTW, mihanson has mythbackend running on an ARM based plug computer. That is too cool!

I should note too that I have a 3.0GHz P4 that can almost do H.264 off my HD-PVRs but not quite so I threw in a PCI based 8400 card.

Does anyone see any issues using a PCI x1 video card similar to:

http://www.amazon.com/Zotac-Express-Gra ... 065&sr=8-1

I'd rather have this one but it's price makes the mobo sound like a better idea:

Thanks, -Abs

My source would be over-the-air USA atsc transmissions of 1080i and 720p with myth converting to 1080p for the TV. The reason for wanting enough power to not use VDPAU is just in case I run into problems like some have with the FOX network. Plus I do a lot of com-flagging, so more CPU is better.

I'm pretty sure any XvMC based card will do (tjc mentioned this before for US based OTA). And yes I'm almost certain a core 2 would be able to decode it too. But I'm not in the US so I have not tested this.

Ion is supported with VDPAU and according to the new egg entry at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814500164 it supports PureVideo which is the equivalent of VDPAU. I did find a positive reference that says it works at: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 76723.html

I have used the PCI variant of this card and works fine on all of my content.

But I would expect the Ion version to be better only because I "think" it has a more recent GPU. The 8400 was one of the first VDPAU capable cards and had a relatively limited feature set.

The cheaper ION would be better? Wow. That blows me away.

I have had issues trying to get HD content to display from traditional PCI cards, I was told a PCI x16 card was needed. So before I shell out another $50, has anyone used a PCI x1 card to display HD content?

Thanks, -Abs

Like I said I "think". To be absolutely sure you would need to find the GPU for that ION and what VDPAU/PureVideo feature set it supports.

A good overview on what cards support what feature sets is on the mythtv wiki: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Vdpau

Also on Wikipedia there is good data: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Vdpau

In those you can see an 8400GS has two flavours. The early one used feature set A and the later (with the G98 GPU) feature set B. I have the latter and it works great over PCI but it must use VDPAU as the PCI bandwidth is too narrow to carry uncompressed H.264.

The IONs started at Feature set B and the later ones have Feature set C. However, I don't see de-interlacing capabilities identified but I presume them to be in line with the feature set advancement.

This table of relative performance may also be useful: http://www.nvidia.com/object/graphics_cards_buy_now.html

Sadly they don't show the relative performance of the ION chips on that chart.
