Hi,

I have a problem where both live TV and watching a recording won't restart after
pausing. The sequence of events is this:

- Start "Watch TV" or a recording.
- Let run for either a few seconds or a minute and skip back.
- Pause. OK.
- Press the P key again to un-pause. Picture may advance a frame or two but
is frozen. The OSD says Play.
- Press the P key again. Picture may advance a frame or two but is frozen (as
it should be). The OSD says Pause.
- Press the P key again. Picture does not advance. The OSD very quickly
flashes Play but goes back to Pause. Sometimes the Pause appears not to
change, probably because the Play flickers too fast to see.
- The last action is now repeatable.
- Pressing the Esc key usually exits after a time. Sometimes I have to kill the
frontend.

Now there are two variations on this. The first variation is this:

- Start "Watch TV"
- Let run for either a few seconds or a minute.
- Pause. OK.
- Press a Left or Right arrow key to skip forward or back. OSD reports Rewind
or Forward as appropriate. Picture is still frozen (as it should be I
think?).
- Press P to un-pause. Playing resumes as it should.

The other variation is that if I somehow occupy /dev/dsp so that I'm asked
if I want to "Continue without Audio" and accept that then pause/unpause works
as it should (minus the sound of course).

Looking through back-posts I saw that around Xmas 2003 and early 2004 there was
a similar problem many were experiencing. An aid in diagnosing then was to leave
live TV running for a while and skip back half-a-minute or so before pausing
and for many people the problem went away. So, in my testing I tried that but
without effect. In all this fooling around I've managed to crash the frontend a
couple of times but the backend has soldiered on without problem. Here's my
setup:

2.4 GHz P4
PVR-250
nVidia GeForce4 MX 440
KnoppMyth R5 Alpha 12
Frontend and backend on the same machine.

I've solved some other quirks (wrong tuner type being forced, for instance) but
this one has left me stumped.

Not sure, but it sounds like you have XvMC enabled in your playback preferences. If so, turn it off and hopefully your freezes will go away.

Exactly right. That did the trick. Many thanks. javascript:emoticon(':D')

According to KnoppMythInstall I have the correct mix of hardware, i.e. PVR-250 and nVidia, that I should select xvmc (although with a 2.4 GHz P4 maybe it isn't necessary). Should KnoppMythInstall be amended to reflect that?

The right mix of hardware is an nvidia or sis video chipset and a CPU too slow to keep up without it. ;-) Very seriously, if you don't really need XvMC, it's almost certainly more trouble than it's worth at the moment.
