I had a question on having a frontend device that is just a playback device.
Does the frontend have any capability of playing a live(Or close to live) program? Like if there was a sports game on, Would it downlaod the stream from the backend, and have the backend tune to the channel, and be able to watch it, or is that just not possbile?

Just want to make sure I am reading this correctly. (Cause if I am, I am starting the project within the month. :D ). I can have a frontend that JUST has network, and the backend has the TV tuner, and I can watch live TV? So basically, I could buy like 4-5 TV tuners for the backend, and just have a bunch of frontends? (that is, if the backend can handle all that network traffic and CPU usage)

that is correct, however don't think you can skimp on the frontends, as the video playback is what takes more cpu. although the latest versions are working very well with the epia boards at least for standard def playback.

I am going with a VIA EPIA M10000 in a Travla C137 w/ 256 mb of RAM, slim line DVD ROM, and a small laptop hard drive maybe 10 gig, anything that is cheap. I also expect on playing the NES Emulator on the frontend, which will be a blast with original NES Controllers plugging into to the USB Ports
This only creates the problem of what I need for the backend.
I was following this guide

Anybody have a good suggestion for a good backend (That won't put a huuuge dent in my wallet) for its own playback and a couple frontends?

I've got 3 PVR250s in my backend box and run Xbox's all over the house for frontends. For $100 or so you can get a used XBOX which already has a DVD drive, TV Out, and an 8-12 Gig HD. Then all you need is the DVD remote kit ($12-$20 used) and a little hacking ability to get the Cromwell bios loaded. With the money you'll save on your front ends, you can build up a stronger backend with lots-o-disk. Just a thought.

Already got the VIA EPIA M10000 and im stuck with it. (no returning it). For the main tv in my house, i'll just set up the nice C137 case with the EPIA. For the rest, I'll probably go with xboxes.
