Hi all,

I've tried configuring MythTV now on three separate occasions (installing with KnoppMyth...then running through the MythTV config and post-config instructions). I've done this over the span of the last 4 months. Each time I fail, I wait until I have some spare time and I try again. I've had the multimedia machine built now since February and haven't had a single TV show play using MythTV yet. Despite this discouraging dilemma, I'm pressing on with R5A16.

I have no odd hardware. GF4 MX440, Haup 350, XP 1900, 768MB RAM, 200GB Maxtor, Abit KX7-333 mobo. The install goes great. I get weather up, (still no sound, but I'm working it), and I setup my TV settings. However, when I go to watch TV...blank screen followed by the error "Unable to initialize video".

I've cycled through so many video modes that I can't even remember what I've cycled through. I've tried over 6 hours worth of configuration changes with NO dice. I'm about played out, but I figured someone might have the answer here. I'm sure people have seen this error before...Can anyone assist me in getting this puppy whipped?

Thanks for your help ahead of time,
Devnet

I'm sure you've gone through this before but once more into the breach...

Is the card being recognized at boot up? I.e. Do you have a IVTV section in /etc/messages where it recognizes the tuner?

Have you successfully downloaded the correct program guide info?

Have you tried cat-ing /dev/video to see if you capture something? How about using the ivtvctl tool to set the input source and the channel?

More as we go through this...

I see the capture card registering at boot....

However, there is no /etc/message or /etc/messages file present...nor directory.

I have successfully downloaded the program guide info :)

What would the command be to capture video from command line? I'll give it a try and see how it does...

I'd never heard of the ivtvtl...but I checked it out after you posted this and here's the output of %> ivtvl -a

Here's another angle on ivtvtl

Code:
root@mythtv:/etc# ivtvctl -I
check SAA7115 input signal
ioctl: VIDEO_STATUS = Bad

SAA7115 reg[STATUS#1 - 0x1E] = 50
 Color Standard (D0-D1): BW/No color
White peak loop (D2): Not activated
Gain value for act.lum. (min) (D3): Not limited
Gain value for act.lum. (max) (D4): Limited
 WIPA-mode slow-time constant (D5): Not activated
 Horizontal frequency (D6): Unlocked
 Field length (D7): Non-standard

SAA7115 reg[STATUS#2 - 0x1F] = e0
 Ready for capture (D0): No
 Macrovision 7.01 (D1): No
 MV Colorstripe burst (D2): No
MV Colorstripe burst type 3 (D3): No
Input signal timebase (D4): Non-stable (VCR)
 Field frequency (D5): 60Hz
 H & V loops (D6): Unlocked
 Interlace (D7): Detected

Sorry typo/thinko that I meant to correct... /var/log/messages

Code:
cat /dev/video >somefilename

Give it 20-30 seconds and then hit Ctrl-C to stop it.

BTW - My intent was that you try to use ivtvctl to select the tuner as the input and set a channel before trying that.

Tested out the video like you stated...

I'm getting nothing but a black screen. My DVD/RW wasn't detecting as a DVD (just a CDROM) so I decided to backtrack and use a different Debian distro for my system instead of Knoppix...I chose MEPIS because it has ivtv and great detection. Everything is ok now...DVD is detected and usable. However, I'm still hitting the same snag...no video.

Here's a copy of /var/log/messages:

I'm having issues with enabling MythTV automatically but I'll solve those...I can get things working together after the login. I just need to get that video up! I'm VERY close and I can feel it. This is the farthest along I've ever gotten. Help is appreciated!

WTH? This sure doesn't look like R5A16, are you using an old version and a newer ivtv driver?
Quote:

Jun 19 12:09:58 MythTV kernel: ivtv: Linux version: 2.6.10 preempt 586TSC gcc-3.3

BTW - This is what my R5A16 system looks like:

Jun 19 13:25:42 black2 kernel: ivtv: version 0.2.0 (rc3j) loading

Good catch on the code...if you notice though, I switched to MEPIS Linux from KnoppMyth because of detection problems.

OK, but that invalidates the stuff we've already checked out, which means it's time to go back to square one.

- Your tuner is being detected and it looks like the right type is being set. Have you got program guide data again? Have you got the right frequency set? If you're not sure and it's between US-Cable and US-Cable-HRC use ivtvctl to tune to channel 5 or 6 since they seem to overlap and do the cat /dev/video test.

- Have you tested the input connection to the tuner using a TV or something? (I.e. - unscrew it from the PC, screw it onto the TV's input connector and make sure you've got signal, don't forget to put it back when you're done.)

- OBTW - I don't like this bit from your ivtvctl -a output:
Quote:
ioctl: VIDIOC_G_INPUT
Input = 0

It should be 4 for Tuner 0. You do have only ONE thing (Tuner 0) associated with your "Video Source" (set of program listings) under "Input Connections" right? You didn't do the same dumb thing I did way back in the day and associate "Cable" (or whatever you called it) with all the inputs did you? ;-)
