Post subject:  Does MythMusic not support .wav files?

Hi brothers:

Well, after finally bothering to upload some pics to Mythgallery and some music to Mythmusic,
I can't seem to play my .wav files. Does Mythmusic not support .wav files? I looked up and down
through the documentation, the WIKI, and even Googled, but couldn't find any consistent answers.
For that matter, I couldn't even find ANY detailed description of what Mythmusic supports/specifications.

If it doesn't support wav, are there any plans for it to do so?

I guess with all the work I've put in, I just don't feel like converting so many MP3s to wav files.

why convert mp3 to wav if wav is not even working for you, if it's the other way around, go ahead and convert them it will save you a TON of space.

You got the answer you did because your question doesn't make sense to us.

MP3 or OGG or WMA or ... conversions are lossy. Converting from there back to WAV doesn't gain you anything, and only costs you disk space. Once the information is gone it's gone. Since you generally rip to (non-lossy) WAV and then encode from that to MP3, or OGG, or ... The standard sound check sample of Linus pronouncing "Linux" is a WAV. If you get sound when you play Frozen Bubble all of those samples are WAVs, ... As a result there must be WAV codecs somewhere on the machine.

I honestly don't know if mythmusic supports wav or not, but I've just never heard of anyone wanting to keep a large music collection in wav format, if you don't want the lossy codecs like mp3 you can at least go with flaq which I know it supports. As a matter of fact I believe when you do a perfect rip from cd on mythtv I think it uses flaq.

So you're saying that Mythmusic DOES support .wav files, or just that I should try it?
Because when I dumped my most important .wav file in that directory, it did not show up
in the Mythmusic menu, unlike all the .mp3s that showed up.

Hi,
If you really want to play a .wav file, you can do that in a terminal. Try something like this:
# play /usr/share/games/frozen-bubble/snd/applause.wav

Maybe someone has ideas how to put it in a menu, but the system can play .wav files.

Hi,

"Play" as far as I know is a basic part of most installs, it was even in my first attempt at compiling a version of Slackware years ago. (386, 10mhz, 16meg mem-- took 4 days :) )

Simply open a terminal or xterm, locate a wave file, and then $ play /path/to/filename.wav If your sound drivers are good to go and not busy, then you should hear something. Try something like this (standard R5A16 stuff)

$ play /usr/share/games/frozen-bubble/snd/applause.wav
then also try
$ aplay /usr/share/games/frozen-bubble/snd/applause.wav

I don't know how large a wave file it will pass through. By the way, the $ is a user prompt while the # is root prompt. The difference is power.. use the # carefully.
