Hello,

I watched the latest episode of Kevin Rose's Systm, and saw a good description of MythTV and KnoppMyth. There's just a couple of tings I don't understand, and would like to ask.

1) You need a cable subscription from a local provider (right?). How about Bell ExpressVu (same system and hardware as Dish Network)?

2) How does it work with Canadian channels?

3) Not to suggest anything illegal, but is it possible to get channels one's not subscribed to? Just asking...

4) Does the computer have to be absolutely dedicated to MythTV?

5) I'm Canadian. Do I lose any features of MythTV?

KnoppMyth questions

6) Is this a full blown Linux? X, KDE and everything?

7) Is it possible to do remote adminstration?

I might think of other questions, and I'll post them if I do. Thanks for the attention? :D

The canadian thing was asked very recently and answered pretty well, short answer works fine in canada, but you can search for the long answers.

no you can't get channels you are subscribed to.

yes knoppmyth is a full linux distrobution it is just optimized for running mythtv, and to make it simple to run mythtv. It does not have too many extra things above and beyond that,(no kde) but they can easily be added with apt-get as long as you have a good internet connection.

knoppmyth comes with ssh for remote admin by default, and webmin is installed, but not activated. so yes it is possible to do remote admin.

Sounds good. Can you tell me if I have to run a dedicated machine?

It's intended as a appliance, and a dedicated machine is highly recommended.

The whole point of having a PVR box is to have it harvest stuff you want to see whenever it's on and while you're doing something else, so you can watch them at your convenience. This means, late at night, or early in the morning, or in the middle of the day, ... while you're asleep, or at work/school, or watching the game on another channel, or playing some video game, or watch something previously recorded, or ...

It can't do this if it isn't running (or in standby mode) at the time. As a result, dual booting or the like kicks the legs out from under whole premise.

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunatly, I don't have a spare machine lying around, so this is not for me...not yet. Great project though, keep at it. :D
