Hi there. I have the basic system working, but noticed some jitteriness for the first 60 seconds or so of watching TV. I'm using the i686 modules, and so I went to the prefs and checked, "Use hardware XvMC MPEG Decoding".

Unfortunately, this produces error, "Unable to Initialize Video". I searched around and found a post that fixed this for an earlier build, but this post also has notes saying this issue is fixed in the current build, R5a16, which is what I'm using.

I tried the fix anyway, and it didn't change anything.

I don't see any obvious red flags in the output from dmesg or from

cat /var/log/messages | grep ivtv

but I'll be happy to post whatever output you think might be helpful.

Thanks for your time.

I know this isn't the answer to your XvMC problem, but frankly your system should certainly be able to play back standard-definition MPEG2 files recorded by your 250 without resorting to XvMC. So whatever jitteriness you're seeing may be due to something else.

I agree, and as I mentioned, this only happens for about one minute after starting the TV, then it "settles in".

However, I will need to know for other systems. For instance, one is a Sempron 2500+ system.

a sempron 2500 should still be able to run smooth video without xvmc.

more to the point of your question, you don't have your video card listed, is it nvidia? if so have you loaded the nvidia drivers? if so what version?

The video card was s'posed to be in my sig, but it was too long and cut off the last line.

The card is an 8x AGP FX5200 made by MSI. Model number FX5200-TD128LF. I installed the 7174 drivers, then changed "nv" to "nvidia" in the config file.

Thanks. :)

by the way, even the Anthon XP 2800+ stutters once in a while for no reason I can descern.

So, I would very much like to make this work. Thanks.

well you may want to make sure you have dma and 32bit I/O working on your harddrive, and for the xvmc you may want to try the 66?? driver I believe that is the one that the xvmc support was compiled against, but cesman can correct me if I'm wrong there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had run hdparm /dev/hda before, but not on this build. I just ran it on this system, and here is the output.

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 16383/255/63, sectors = 123522416640, start = 0

I think this means it is A-OK, but I'm sure you know more about this than I do.

Other commands I should run to test? Thanks again.[/i]

Sorry, forgot to mention: the 66xx driver won't install.

yeah that hdparm output looks good. What do you mean the 66xx driver wouldn't install? what kind of error did you get?

MythTV is compiled to use XvMC via the XvMC wrapper. If you'd have used the nvidia installation scripts provided, it would have set this up for you. You have to change /etc/X11/XvMCConfig to /usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1.

I have used the installer scripts provided, although one thing I tried at one point was going to nVidia's site and using their latest driver.

Most of the problems I've had have to do with trying to figure out which things in the wiki are current and which are not. I've been flamed for not knowing which are and which aren't, and for not knowing certain conventions to Linux. I'm a newbie, so yeah, I had no idea that there's a man page for exports, something that I thought was a config file. I've been on many forums before, but this is the first one in which I've been flamed for not being a good enough mind reader.

But I think I have it set up, thanks to a few very nice people like you.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out right now.

If you want to be flamed, I'll frelling flame you. How the hell is what I posted a flame? From your original post, I can tell you didn't use the script because the script changes nv to nvidia in XF86Config-4. If you'd have searched the forum, you'd have found your answer as this has been covered before. How is that for a flame?
