Post subject:  CDROM Device doesn't show up in CD Recording Settings Dialog

Hi all:

Well, thanks to many of you, progress on my Mythbox is moving slowly but surely. My next problem to tackle:

I cannot RIP CDs. When I go into the Setup Menu, and go to

Media Settings-->
Music Settings-->
General Settings-->
CD Recording Settings-->
CD Recording Device

The CD Recording Device is set to my hard drive (sda). I try to change it to my DVD/CDROM
combo drive (hdc), but I cannot-it remains fixed on my hard drive.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Post subject:  Ripping & Burning

Hi shplad,

I'm confused, are you trying to rip or burn? Most likely two different different issues. What version are you running?

Thanks
Mike

Thanks.
Trying to rip a CD. I can actually rip from a DVD, but can't rip from a CD, due to the
setting problem above. The only available device in the drop down menu in the setup
screen is the hard drive. (Strange, considering it's a SATA device.)

Oh, and it's R5A12.

Hi shplad,
Does not your dvd drive also play cd's? Any time I rip a cd (music) it puts the file into the /myth/music directory. Maybe I am misunderstanding the question. Anyway, I had a lot of trouble making R5A12 do what I thought it should. If I were a used car salesman I'd be trying to sell you that new shinny one at the front of the showroom, model "R5A16" :)

Thanks for that. Aw geez, sorry, I got confused. I was trying to WRITE a CD, not RIP one.
Also haven't been able to write a DVD, and I believe this is related to that.

Yeah, yeah, I know, but when you've spent weeks trying to get things working on
your current setup, who wants to start all over again? I noticed something in the menu setup.
The help text for that section reads:

Code:
"Select the SCSI device for CD writing. If your IDE device is not present,
try adding hdd (or hdc/hdb)=ide-scsi to your boot options."

I don't know what that means, but I'm guessing that the Myth developers were suggesting I should
add that statement to my lilo.conf? Does that sound like it might be my solution?
If not, could it be I've got an incorrect symlink pointing to sda instead of hdc or something similar?

thanks again

Hi shplad,

Ok about the burning, I personally haven't gotten to that stage but hopefully soon. I have been dogging the XF86Config / remote x settings. So easy to mess them up and is quite tricky to get pvr350 tv out with remote x also. It is really cool to ssh in and type xedit having it pop up on the local machine. It is even more cool when you can run mythtv-setup on a machine that is miles away.

I can't confirm the lilo location however I am faily certain that is the correct place to make that entry for the ide-scsi emulation. I will get there eventually.

The upgrade really isn't too painful, do the backup before your shutdown, (I always forget so now it is part my halt / reboot script ) copy out your XF86Config-4 to a safe place so you can put it back after the upgrade. Most of everything is there after the upgrade.

I think you have been at this longer than I so most is probably old news but personally I would rather hear something maybe twice than not at all. :)

Will let you know if I make any discoveries.

I'm sorry I just scanned the thread, so I don't know the details, but you don't need ide-scsi it was intentionally removed as all the utilities now support native atapi cd burning.

Thanks for the tip. Well, any idea how I can get my DVD drive to show up in
that dialog box, because right now, it's locked onto my HD, and there is no
other choice in the drop-down menu.

Hi shplad,

I hadn't put my toe into those burnning waters yet. Mainly because I only have one burner and that hasn't been the box I've been tinkering with. I'll learn along with you :) Give me a couple of days to do some research also. In between time some else may see our plight and offer help?

Any new tips on this topic to add the device without changing the boot options?

Hmmm.....I thought this would be a dead simple question.

Can anyone at least tell us from what file Myth gets the drive options in that above-mentioned dialog box?

And an even better question: How is it that in spite of the above, I have some ability to RIP CDs and DVDs, but not burn DVDs or MPEG4 CDs? Please-Set me straight.

Thanks

The issue has to do with the way the kernel address burners. This has been fixed in SVN version of MythTV. The fix will be in the next release of KnoppMyth (when it is done....).

Thanks Cesman, as always.

<sigh> Wish there was better news, though.

If you are hot to trot, you can install SVN version yourself...
