Hello, I'm a long time reader, first-time poster.
Just got a hauppauge 350 for my box, and have managed to install it but I have snow on every channel when watching live or recording.
Before you flame me for not doing my homework, here's what I wanna know:

This is probably due to channel info being incorrect, but how do I fix it?
is it to go through mythtv-setup and edit channels, and change the "frequency ID" bit to correct Frequency, for instance 137,5 or whatever..?
It seems to me that the manual mostly deals with US standards, so I'm sorry if I have misunderstood?

Secondly, I haven't found the frequencies provided by my cable provider (upc.no)
On their webpage, all links seem to be old and long gone, so if any norwegians who has managed to fix this, please tell me how to get started..
I will also try and google some more to find this but any help appreciated.

PS: I set the tuner type to -1 in /etc/ivtv, since this was what syslog reported.
Could it be I have to change this to something else?

Or, is it any way to start a "channel search" on my tv-card just to see if I can find any channels at all?

Thanks in advance, let me know if I should include any more information.
And I have tried to fix it myself before I asked you guys, but I can't seem to find just what I need from searching the forums, it seems like no matter what I type in, the very same posts appears... But maybe that's just me.

I live in sweden and has a cable provider. I used the ptune.pl util to list the channel freq. Then I tested each freq i.e. SE12 , E8 and so on until I found all channels. You can use mythtv-setup or mythweb to edit the frequency.

Code:
ptune.pl --list-channels -f pal-europe-west
ptune.pl 1.11 for use with http://ivtv.sf.net/

Available Channels for pal-europe-west:
SE11    = 231250
E8      = 196250
SE8     = 154250
S29     = 367250

Update: First of all, thanks ille, for your quick answer, I tried listing channels and then trying each and every one but unfortenately, still static.

that was using ivtv-0.1.9, so I decided to upgrade to R5A16 to see if this would help.
So, after a few startup problems (X, sound, mplayer issues) I was finally able to check the TV, but still have the same issues, static / snow that is...
(But at least tveeprom now finds (hopefully ) correct tuner. ( 38 )

A disturbing thing is that it seems to change to NTSC after INIT IVTV
(check the dmesg log underneath..)

Just to be sure I tried capturing from command line with this parameters:
ivtvctl -u 0xff //setting PAL
ivtvctl -p 4 //my tuner
And then setting different frequencies found in output from:
ptune.pl --list-channels -f pal-europe-west

ivtvctl -F [frequency]
cat /dev/video0 > /myth/video/first.mpeg

Which gives me snow when watching..
I also changed input to all other numbers (0 - 9), and all of them produced black video, so I must be using correct tuner..

If someone would bother to check my logs or provide me with any hints, feel free to do so...! :)
Oh yes, by the way, my coax cable is connected to the tuner, I've checked it about a dozen times now, in case anyone wonders..

here comes my logs and configs:

Here is one obvious problem...
Quote:
tuner: Unknown parameter `type'
ivtv: Failed to load module tuner

This line from your /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv looks like the problem:
Quote:
options tuner pal=1 type=38

If the types are autodetected correctly there's no need to use even the modern version of that. Delete that part of the options line and you may be much happier. Also this:
Quote:
saa7127: Unknown parameter `enable_output'
saa7127: Ignoring new-style parameters in presence of obsolete ones
ivtv: Failed to load module saa7127

Indicates that it doesn't like part of this line:
Quote:
options saa7127 enable_output=1 output_select=0 pal=1

Again delete the bit it's complaining about and you should be happier.

Hey tjc and thanks alot for your advice.
Deleted all the lines as instructed, and made some progress, at that point I had different static signals on each channel so I knew I was on the right track.
The solution to that was quite simple, don't remember where I found it but someone had this in their /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv:

options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 tda9887=0

so after including tda9887=0, picture turned up! :)
For the record, here is my ivtv config in case someone else ever get into the same:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
alias /dev/video0 ivtv
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 tda9887=0
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1

Really really happy to make it this far, and thanks to all developers and this friendly community, knoppmyth really rocks!

One more question by the way, I should probably start a new thread but here goes:
My liveTV is choppy, and this is probably due to not very optimized settings.
I haven't had the time to see if recordings are okay but watching movies haven't been a problem so I think it will be okay.

My hardware is a P4 celeron at 1GHz, 256 MB RAM, 40 + 200 GB disc with DMA enabled, and the potential problem(?) :
TV-out on a Sapphire Radeon 7000 PCI. (Using "mplayer -vo x11" to watch videos..)
So I believe I have some options and want to know what would be the best (and easiest :) )

1. Recompile mplayer to better suit my hardware..?
2. Enable tv-out on my hauppauge 350..?
3. use mplayer with framedrop ? (probably bad quality, but then again tv is sort of bad quality already so would I spot the difference?
4. Err.. some other trick?

I should probably just try myself and find out, but still want to check first:
Have I understood it right if tv-out on the 350 is the best option, both in terms of picture quality and less intensive for the cpu?
In that case, I will do it but it seemed like a bit of a task and I don't really wanna break my computer now that it works pretty good...
I wouldn't mind just recording stuff and watching it later so it's not really necessary to have the Live_TV bit for my use..
But what would you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance!
