Is it possible to setup Myth to watch live TV without recording to the buffer?

I know I can probably use xawtv, but is it possible to pass the signal straight through to the Myth TV viewer?

I have a second tuner without a hardware encoder that I'd like to try this with and I doubt my CPU could handle the load.

NO kidding! I'd like this feature too. It'd make soo much sense to dedicate one software based tuner to just feed straight through and then use the others for recording....

I think there's room for traditional channel surfing in Myth.

This was recently discussed (again) on the MythTV (dev) mailing list. You can specify an app for LiveTV, but then what are you going to do when someone calls and you cannot pause?! Search the list for details...

Turn on Browse mode. You stay on your current channel, browse through the channels and show descriptions, and when you finally find something you like, press Enter and you only get the long delay once.

And I would say that since xawtv is out there and allows you to watch live TV without the buffer, then you can shut down MythTV and fire up xawtv when you want to watch like that. Pausing live TV is a significant aspect of a PVR, and MythTV is a PVR...

I disagree with you guys.

I think it should be able to do both.

Let the user decide how they want it to work.

As long as there is not some technical reason that it "absolutely, positively, no way" that it can be done, then why not?

If someone calls, well then I'll start recording. Hell, it's probably not that important a show if I'm not recording anyway.

BTW, in browse mode, I can't see the shows to preview them. After all it is supposed to be a visual medium.

You have to remember that people are basically lazy and this "appliance" is supposed to make their life easier.

Heh. Maybe they should just make xawtv part of Myth then.

I fully agree with gummybear. Sure there might be workarounds, and not that great of ones albeit...

But some of us have families, such as a wife and kids that would only want the remote, and would NOT want to fire up another application just to watch TV. Like gummybear said, this is supposed to make life easier, not harder. It's tough enough to get my wife to buy into this, but to make it harder than just TV was before is ridiculous.

I'd just hit R to begin recording if someone came, and yeah, channel surfing is still fun to see what's on, not just read it. The pause isn't great at all.

I love MythTV, but I think this flexibility would give us more options...

Exactly. I had to do the same thing and split the signal for the wifey to use the built-in tuner.

There's no way that she could figure all this stuff out or even want to.

She just wants to turn on the TV and chill to Desperate Housewives.

The one time she tried watching TV through Myth, she complained "Why is thing thing so slow to change channels." <sigh>

This is the prevalent mentality obtained by years of traditional channel surfing and it's not going to change over night. That's another reason why I think the ability to turn off the buffer would be a good way to ease folks into timeshifted TV.
