Post subject:  DVB-C adapter works from command line, but not from MythTV
For some time I'm trying to get my KNC-One DVB-C adapter to work. First tests were done on a separate box and a clean R5A12 install which worked (FTA only). Then I tried to add the adapter to my R4V5 "production" system as a second encoder next to my PVR350. I have gotten to the part where I can tune using czap and create an mpeg stream with dvbstream which mplayer plays back just fine.
I have recompiled MythTV from svn and made sure that DVB support is compiled in. From myth-setup I can add the adapter, but scanning doesn't seem to work at all. I have tried full scans on different frequencies, but the progress bar doesn't go beyond 3% (even after 5 hours). Scanning using dvbscan from the command line gives me a list of channels in minutes. This list works fine with czap. I have tried adding channels manually using the R5A12 test box as an example but that doesn't seem to work. Switching adapters in Live TV shows a black screen briefly and then switches back to the PVR350. These messages appear in the backend log:

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try next? Could someone provide me with examples of capturecard, cardinput, channel and dtv_multiplex table contents of mixed analog / DVB capturecard configurations?

You'd probably have better luck trying to get this to work with 2.6. I'd suggest moving to the latest R5.

Thank you for the quick reply. I am considering this. The thing is I have spent a lot of time to tweak my setup to what it is now. I'd rather expand it that starting from scratch. I could upgrade, but my experience with upgrades is that it leaves a mix of old and new.

Auto Upgrade will wipe /dev/hda1 clean (backup first). It restores the db and a few config files but that is about. If you browse the forum or take a look at the script, you'll find greater details.

OK, so there won't be a mix of old and new, but all the tweaking would have to be recreated after the upgrade. I have plenty of backups that should help, but still a lot of time would be needed to have it all back up the way I want it. Time is the main issue. That's why I'm hoping to get it working with the current setup, as it would save me a lot of time.

It's solved now. Apparently the version of Myth that I used (svn r7164) had some DVB bugs. I checked out the latest again (svn r7318) and recompiled with the same options. Now I have both tuners working in R4V5. That's the risk of using experimental stuff. It took me two versions that didn't work to have a working one. Luckily reverting to previous versions is easy, so should the next checkout break things then I can always go back to this working one.
Next challenge: encrypted channels.

Hi,

What is your provider? Any luck with decrypting the signal? Do you need a common interface? If so, is it supported by your version of Knoppmyth? I have Essent (TVHome) and the official answer of customer service is:

No luck yet. Haven't a lot of time lately to try it though. I tried TV Home too. Recently they have removed all FTA channels and only offer encrypted channels so I removed the DVB-C adapter from my Myth backend.

The reason it's not working may be a couple of reasons:

- The Metzler Bros driver doesn't support the CI module or CAM
- The Irdeto CAM is not supported by the KNC-1 card / CI module
- The Essent TV-Home smartcard does not support non Essent provided decoding hardware

To try and work that out I setup a Windows XP system. This way I know for sure that both the KNC DVB adapter and CI module are supported by the vendor as they have provided the driver for it.
I need to buy a new smartcard as the update of the smartcard can only be done in a Essent decoder and their network has changed quite a bit recently.

The official answer you got from Essent could mean two things:

- Updating the smartcard does not work in other decoders such as a DVB-C card plus CI
- The card will check that any of the Essent approved decoders is used

If it is the first then it should work until they update the network again. In that case their decoder is needed to update the smart card or buy a new one. If it is the second then were out of luck and Essent deprives itself of potential customers. I'd be glad to pay for their service, I just want to be able to capture the DVB stream in MythTV and not an analog source from SCART through their decoder.

I am seriously considering satellite now because of these restrictions. I'll probably try once more with a new smartcard and the Windows XP setup as a proof of concept. If that doesn't work I'll buy a dish and DVB-S card.

Hi,

I've found that fireDTV C/CI with alphacrypt 3.05 is working with the signal of Essent / TV Home. Unfortunately, I have no idea whether KnoppMyth supports non-US firewire based tuners. It should be nice to have this device (or its little brother floppyDTV C/CI which fits into a barebone) on the KnoppMyth reference Platform. The company (Digital Everywhere)
