After I play a recorded show, or well it doesn't even have to finish playing i can exit out of the playing show and the frontend exits. Is there a script i can start mythfroint end with that will auto restart it upon it crashing? or does anyone have a fix for this issue? Also I am using gentoo not knoppmyth.

have you looked into the log files in /var/log and /var/log/mythtv

You can try running mythfrontend from an xterm window, you may get some clues to the issue in the xterm output.

you can do like stated earlier and run mythfrontend from an xterm and see what is spat out there, probably segfault which really doesn't tell you much, but couldn't hurt, also you can check .xsession-errors file.

so I'm gathering from that what you are trying to say is you can't read the error messages printed out in the xterm? if you take a look at /home/username/.xsession-errors it should give you similar messages.
